    GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PRIMARY PURPOSE

     

    Responsible for managing the Human Resources function and activities for approximately 2,500 seasonal and year-round cooler and agricultural employees in the Salinas, Marina, Oxnard, Huron and Yuma, AZ locations. Responsible for supporting the full life cycle of the employee by ensuring the recruiting, hiring, orientation, compensation and benefits, record keeping and compliance processes.

     

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS/DUTIES OF THE POSITION

     

    RECRUITING & EMPLOYEE/LABOR RELATIONS (25%)

    • Oversees the recruiting and hiring process for cooler and agricultural
    • Directs the creation and maintenance of job descriptions and organizational charts.
    • In coordination with Operations, establishes wage and salary structure, pay strategy, and performance appraisal programs. Monitors for effectiveness and cost containment.
    • Directs the orientation/on-boarding of commodities and cooler employees to ensure proper training is being administered.
    • Responsible for handling and resolving escalated Employee Relations and Labor situations by objectively coaching employees and management through complex situations based on judgement that is consistent with company standards, practices, policies, procedures, regulations, and government laws.

     

    BENEFITS & LEAVE OF ABSENCE (25%)

    • Oversees the administration of benefit programs for hourly commodities and cooler employees.
    • Provides consultation to operations on benefits matters.
    • Responsible for administration of all leave of absence programs in accordance with company, local, state, and federal regulations.

     

    POLICIES AND PROCEDURES (25%)

    • Supports management by providing human resources direction, advice, and counsel.

    • Serves as a coach and a mentor to company management and HR team members regarding the responsibilities of HR within a large public company.

    • Oversees the development of training plans for cooler and agricultural

    • Manages communication processes of policies and procedures and responsible for ensuring all employment/labor/wage postings comply with local, state, and federal law.

    • Directs and implements compliant and consistent progressive disciplinary procedures.

    • Oversees the development and monitors annual departmental budget.

    • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to upper management.

     

    COMPLIANCE AND REPORTING (25%)

    • Oversees regulatory compliance requirements, processes and reporting including but not limited to Affirmative Action (AA), Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Form I-9, etc.
    • Mitigates risk to company by monitoring and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance.
    • Ensures that all records are maintained and disposed of properly to comply with company policy, state and federal laws.
    • Administers or oversees the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.

     

    JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS)

     

    • 10-15 years’ experience gained through increasingly responsible management positions within Human Resources; experience in the Agriculture industry strongly experience preferred.
    • Strong background in employee and labor relations in California.
    • Strong interpersonal, management, and leadership skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently within interpretive guidelines, take initiative, and perform effectively in fast-paced and constantly changing environment.
    • Strong conflict resolution, problem solving, and mediation skills.
    • Working knowledge of federal, state regulations as well as those specific to the Ag industry.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills.
    • Bilingual/biliterate English/Spanish language skills.
    • High degree of initiative with a strong sense of urgency and business orientation.
    • Ability to provide excellent customer service to all levels within the organization.
    • High level of skills in handling sensitive and confidential situations/information with the demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
    • Solid knowledge of various software applications, including word processing and database applications.

    EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources, administration, or related field
    • MBA or other advanced business degree preferred

    • Minimum two direct reports; may lead a team through managers

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

     

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift (including overhead) and/or up to 25 lbs.
