    OVERVIEW:

    The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn's award-winning weekly newspaper, The Tablet, is looking for a seasoned journalist to fill the role of managing editor. _The Tablet_­—in print since 1908—has a circulation of nearly 70-thousand newspapers, is produced by lay people and its staff has full editorial control. The managing editor reports to the editor-in-chief of print publications. They will be responsible for running the day-to-day editorial operations of the newspaper and will use their strong leadership and problem-solving skills to lead the team through a reorganization that includes: a complete redesign, hiring additional staff/freelancers, and helping to orchestrate the transition from QuarkXpress to InDesign. The Tablet is part of a larger news group that includes the Spanish-language newspaper, Nuestra Voz, the nightly newscast Currents News, and a digital department that oversees the group's online content. The managing editor will play a role in a newly implemented convergence strategy. They will coordinate and share content with departments within the group (listed above), and foster the paper's partnership with the international online publication cruxnow.com. The managing editor will work with the editor-in-chief to select the paper's content, will work with the assignment desk to select stories, edit reporter stories, and among other things, ensure that the style and design remains consistent. They will have a strong understanding of the Catholic Church, its teachings, and doctrine, and they will commit themselves to becoming extremely knowledgeable about the workings of the Diocese of Brooklyn.

    RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

    • Run the day-to-day editorial and operations of the newspaper
    • Write articles, captions, and headlines
    • Copy edit reporter articles
    • Help to layout news content as needed (until responsibility fully transitions to the newly created position of Production/Graphic Design Manager)
    • Give final approval on pages before they are sent to the printer
    • Work closely with assignment desk & digital content managers
    • Communicate and coordinate with columnists
    • Train new reporters and staff
    • Be a point of contact for the sales department
    • Monitor and answer reader emails and letters
    • Attend editorial and managers' meetings
    • Identify articles for journalism award submissions
    • Ensure that editor-in-chief's strategy and vision for the newspaper is executed

    EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

    • 8+ years as a newspaper editor
    • Degree in journalism, English, or equivalent
    • Excellent print writing skills and knowledge of the AP style
    • Excellent news judgment
    • Knowledge of libel laws
    • Knowledge of the Catholic Church
    • Ability to multitask
    • Thrives in a deadline-driven environment
    • Pays very close attention to detail
    • Proven skills in management and leadership
    • Trained eye for design and layout that includes being proficient in QuarkXpress and/or InDesign
    • Photoshop (knowledge of Color Profiles, and color correction for a newspaper)
    • WordPress for posting articles to website and working knowledge of SEO
    • Social media best practices
