  • Responsibilities

    The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) administers daily medication to include oral and topical medication to residents under the supervision of a licensed nurse (LVN). They document medication administration on the medication administration record, noting if the resident has adverse reactions to medications and any changes in patient condition and reporting such incidents to licensed nurse. Medication aides reorder medications from pharmacy and keep medication carts clean and stocked. they monitor resident’s vital signs (BP, pulse, respirations and temperature) as well as behavioral changes in the residents. Medication aides are required to know the different classifications of drugs and their side effects and recognize and report medication errors to licensed nurse. Medication aides need to know state laws as well as facility policies related to medication administration.

    Required Skills

    1. A mature individual with a strong knowledge base and keen understanding and appreciation of the elderly.
    2. The ability to present to the community the philosophy of community-bases long term care for the elderly.
    3. The skill to work collectively and communicate effectively with staff, participants, and family members.
    4. Adaptable individual with ability to work with the interdisciplinary team approach to care for the elderly.
    5. The ability to accept supervision in an appropriate manner.
    6. Ability to rotate holidays and shifts at the discretion of the facility’s manager.
    7. Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish).

    Required Experience

    1. Hold a current certification of Medication Aide as required by state law.
    2. One year of experience in a medical setting, preferably with the geriatric and/or dementia population.
    3. Must have a GED, High School or equivalency.
    4. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
