Position Mission
The Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) is a licensed dental professional whose scope of practice includes preventative, therapeutic, and educational services aimed at improving and maintaining patients’ oral health. In accordance with California law, the RDH performs clinical duties including prophylaxis, periodontal therapies, local anesthesia administration, and radiographs. The hygienist is a key contributor to patient care and collaborates closely with the dentist to develop and implement treatment strategies.
Required Qualifications
Active California Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) License in good standing.
Completion of a dental hygiene program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
CPR/BLS Certification from an American Heart Association or equivalent provider.
Radiography Certification approved by the California Dental Board.
Local Anesthesia Certification approved by the California Dental Board.
Soft Tissue Curettage Certification approved by the California Dental Board.
Knowledge of California Dental Practice Act and adherence to the Dental Hygiene Board of California (DHBC) regulations.
Minimum 1 year of clinical experience preferred.
Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and dental imaging systems.
Excellent communication, organization, and patient care skills.
Job Responsibilities
Clinical Duties (In Compliance with California Regulations)
Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including medical/dental history, extra/intraoral exams, periodontal charting, and risk assessments.
Take and interpret dental radiographs per California dental board protocols.
Perform scaling and root planing, prophylaxis, and oral debridement procedures.
Administer local anesthesia and nitrous oxide (if certified) under the dentist's supervision.
Apply topical fluorides, sealants, and other preventative materials.
Identify and document caries, periodontal disease, or oral pathology; refer to the dentist for further evaluation.
Educate patients on oral hygiene, nutrition, and preventive care techniques.
Take impressions for whitening trays, night guards, and mouth guards.
Adhere to strict infection control protocols, OSHA standards, HIPAA compliance, and universal precautions.
Sterilize instruments, disinfect operatories, and maintain a safe clinical environment.
Administrative & Support Duties
Maintain accurate and detailed clinical documentation and progress notes.
Assist in maintaining dental records, including periodontal charting and treatment progress.
Schedule and manage recall systems and follow-up appointments.
Support the front office with patient communications, referrals, and scheduling as needed.
Participate in continuing education and staff training to remain current with clinical standards and regulations.
Promote a positive patient experience through empathetic care and effective communication.
