JOB DESCRIPTION Employees in this job function as professional special education teachers, completing a variety of assignments to teach regular or special subjects in a therapeutic, educational setting. SCHEDULE * This position is scheduled 7:30am-3:30pm (includes a 55-minute plan time and a lunch period) and will follow the academic school year calendar * This position requires the special education teacher to work a six-week summer school session in addition to the regular academic school year calendar. * This position accrues personal and medical time. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES · Teaches classes at the elementary or secondary level, in academic, elective or special subjects (affective education, life skills, independent living, Physical Education), within a specific area of special education. · Prepares, adapts, and delivers instructional material. · Develops suitable curricula and effective teaching methods based on assessment of students' needs. · Supervises students in classrooms, school buildings and social-curricular activities. · Works with the Special Education Coordinator to facilitate IEP meetings. · Teaches desirable study, work and recreational habits by providing pupils with opportunities for which they are best suited. · Create and maintain student records and prepare reports relative to the work. · Selects appropriate texts, learning aids, materials, and supplies. · Participates in teacher training and teacher meetings as required. · Maintains records and prepares reports and correspondence related to the work. · Supports and encourages positive behaviors and contain negative behaviors in the classroom through the use of behavior management techniques, school-wide contingency management program and individual Behavior Support Plans. · Other duties as assigned by the Director of Education as needed for the management and overall success of the academic and treatment programs at the Bansbach Academy at the Denver Children's Home QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Education and/or Experience · Possession of a Colorado Department of Education special education license or has the ability to acquire a Statement of Eligibility (SOE)/Special Education Generalist Alternative License or Emergency Teacher Eligibility Authorization (TEE). · "Highly Qualified" in a core content area or able to become Highly Qualified. · Able to work as outlined in the academic school year which includes 180 days and one-six-week summer school session. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities · Knowledge of the principles and practices of teaching. · Knowledge of subjects and activities required in therapeutic facility school. · Knowledge of instructional methods applicable therapeutic facility school. · Knowledge of the texts, materials, supplies and equipment necessary in carrying out educational or recreational programs. · Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends and sources of information in the field of education. · Ability to evaluate critically the educational achievements of students and to give assignments according to their interests and ability. · Ability to prepare lesson plans and organize a meaningful instructional program. · Ability to prepare examinations to test the attainment of students. · Ability to interpret the results of tests. · Ability to maintain discipline and to get along well and develop rapport with children. · Ability to maintain records, and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work. · Ability to communicate effectively with others. · Ability to maintain favorable public relations.
