    POSITION SUMMARY : Detroit Action is looking for fellows to join our 2024 Communications & Culture Fellowship. The Communications Fellow is responsible for supporting the Communications Dept. to amplify our messaging on issue campaigns and policy, distribute political education materials, and recruit people to monthly communications events. They will also be responsible for assisting in the creation of press materials for Detroit Action. Furthermore, they will be responsible for assisting the Comms/Culture Director throughout the year for our electoral program.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The person will be responsible for engagement online, recruiting new members, and organizing in digital spaces.

    • Develop new relationships with local reporters and emphasize existing relationships
    • Conduct spokesperson training to develop narrative skills of DA members
    • Work with Justice Speaks on crafting press releases/advisories/statements and Monthly Newsletter
    • Support in planning for Neighborhood Summit and Power Summit, especially with press & materials
    • Assist in Detroit Action’s planning and programming for Southwest Fest
    • 1:1 meetings with organizers and campaigns to identify comms needs and support
    • Build relationships with local creatives who can share and teach their artistry
    • Help form an arts and culture committee that will hold Values & Culture conversations

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Experience and ability to work/organize across racial and cultural lines.
    • Experience doing community, labor, or political organizing.
    • Experience working in a grassroots membership organization or other type of social justice organization.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Keen analytical skills

    ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

    Fellows are supervised by the Communications Director and will be peer-supported by the canvassing staff and other organizing staff.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • The position is a part-time position that works up to 20 hours per week.
    • This position is based in an office building in Detroit, MI.
    • The position occasionally requires weekend work (Saturday and Sunday).
    • The position requires work outside up to 75% of the time and will be exposed to the elements and inclement weather.

    PREFERRED CANDIDATE:

    • Must be able to submit a resume or cover letter
    • Candidates must have reliable transportation to and from the office
    • Passion for and experience in social justice and/or political causes
    • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with diverse peers, stakeholders and communities
    • Collaborative work ethic and ability to work effectively across lines of difference
    • Ability to work autonomously as part of an innovative team
    • Ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively, including speaking in small and large group settings.
    • Alignment with Detroit Action’s Mission and Theory of Change
    • Must be willing to work flexible hours that will include time outside of the traditional work day including evenings and weekends.
    • Organized and time management
    • Experience working in communities of color highly preferred

    SALARY:

    The salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $20 per hour.
