Job Summary
The NICU Dietitian is responsible for providing specialized nutrition care to critically ill and premature neonates. This role collaborates closely with neonatologists, nurses, lactation consultants, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized nutrition plans that support optimal growth, development, and medical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Assess the nutritional needs of premature and critically ill infants in the NICU
Develop, implement, and monitor individualized nutrition care plans
Calculate and manage enteral and parenteral nutrition (TPN) prescriptions
Monitor growth parameters, lab values, and tolerance to nutrition therapies
Collaborate with the interdisciplinary NICU team on patient care plans
Provide guidance on breast milk fortification, formula selection, and feeding advancement
Educate parents and caregivers on infant nutrition and feeding plans when appropriate
Ensure compliance with hospital policies, infection control standards, and regulatory requirements
Document nutrition assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the medical record
Participate in quality improvement initiatives, rounds, and case discussions
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field
Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential required
Licensed or eligible for licensure per state regulations
Minimum of 1–2 years of clinical nutrition experience required
NICU or pediatric nutrition experience required
