  • Responsibilities

    The primary work of the Director of Music Ministries is to invite worshippers into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through participation and leadership in music. The DMM is responsible for the Sanctuary Choir and all aspects of preparing and implementing music for worship services. A passion for excellence in varied genres of worship music is essential, as well as the gifts of positive communication, leadership, relationship-building, and administration. A successful DMM will develop and oversee a music ministry that is: • vibrant and fully integrated into the worship life of the church • engaging and enriching the voice of the whole congregation • theologically Reformed, honoring the classical fabric of the church’s music history while balancing styles and embracing a breadth of musical traditions This role is 12 months with an average of 10-12 hours per week (to include 1 hour of staff/worship planning, 2.5 hours of rehearsal, 2.5 hours of Sunday worship, 4-6 hours of administration, visioning, and personal preparation. Responsibilities: Worship Planning: • Worship planning meetings (<1 hour/week) with pastor and worship programming staff/volunteers • Selecting hymns and other service music in collaboration with the pastor and musicians • Shaping particular services so all pieces flow and feed one another • Monthly or seasonal planning meetings with the pastor, worship committee, and musicians Personal Planning, including but not limited to: • Reading the Bible, and other articles and resources • Finding newly composed hymn texts or tunes, psalm settings, litanies, and musical genres to engage the congregation • Visioning and Planning for Occasional or Special Services • Learn congregation and congregational gifts, and assist members in finding their music ministry niche • Lead Sanctuary Choir • Organize and maintain music library • Rehearsal planning • Occasional rehearsal with soloists, ensembles, and guest instrumentalists • Responsible for online music copyright reporting as directed by licensure. Explore Music Ministry Opportunities • This could include: handbell choir, folk or other band, youth or children’s ensemble, new adult vocal ensemble, etc. • Expand opportunities for vocalists who may not be prepared to commit to the choir full-time Additional Information: • Opportunities for Continued Education will be reviewed as needed • Total Personal Days and Education leave may include up to 4 choir rehearsals and 4 Sundays annually (excluding special services; list of these services to be provided) • On Sundays, the DMM is required to be at church from 9:45 to 12:15 approximately • Christmas Eve, Easter, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Ash Wednesday are required work days • Occasionally, the DMM may need to provide accompaniment if the accompanist is unable to do so • Adult choir practices on Wednesday nights. Choir does not practice in the summer months (generally June-August). • Children’s choir “Little Lights” practices on Sunday nights. Their program year generally aligns with the school year • Throughout the year, there may be other times the DMM is expected to work, subject to the calendar of the church • Must be able to work in an office environment using a computer workstation, and must be able to engage in and lead, sometimes vigorous physical activities with children and youth, to include lifting equipment up to 26 lbs. • Background check and Boundaries Training required for employment. Qualifications: • Strong Christian faith and willingness to learn about the Reformed Christian Theology • Holds a music degree or has relevant experience • Demonstrates proficiency on one or more instruments and/or has a strong knowledge of music theory • Demonstrates ability to organize, coordinate, and motivate volunteer musicians • A willingness to invest in relationships with church members and support them on their faith journey • The ability to work and communicate with others • A willingness to try new things and the maturity to bounce back from disappointments • Work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers • Willingness to commit to this position for two or more years Compensation: $18,00 - $24,000 yearly commensurate with experience
