Position Title: Director of Accounting
Summary: The Director of Accounting reports directly to the CFO. The Director of Accounting is responsible for the design and implementation of general accounting and financial reporting procedures in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and regulatory guidance. The Director of Accounting prepares, reviews, analyzes, and adjusts the Credit Union’s financial data. Directs and leads the preparation of management and regulatory reports by providing direction, support, and guidance to the Accounting Department.
Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Manages, evaluates, and recognizes the performance of their direct reports.
Prepares or reviews monthly Credit Union financial statements and schedules presented to the Board of Directors from month end general ledger reports and approved budget; and provides analysis of variances from budget and prior periods.
Participates in development and implementation of financial strategies by contributing accounting and financial information to improve the Credit Union’s profitability, liquidity, and interest rate risk.
Designs and implements accounting and financial reporting procedures and corresponding work papers in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), Credit Union regulatory guidelines, industry standards, and sound internal controls.
Coordinates, monitors, and reviews the collection of financial data and supporting schedules for completion of audited financial statements.
Reviews and authorizes payment of invoices and expense items prepared in accounts payable to ensure proper account classifications and approvals prior to disbursement.
Assists with preparation of annual budget and financial forecasts by collecting and summarizing data, projections, and assumptions obtained from accounting systems, senior management, and market analyses.
Reviews or prepares other periodic reports filed with Credit Union regulatory agencies.
Designs, computes, or reviews monthly income and expense accruals, prepares or reviews applicable general ledger entries, and reviews reconciliations of corresponding accounts.
Prepares and\or coordinates the preparation of financial reports, reconciliations, and supporting schedules used in annual audited financial statements and periodic regulatory exams.
Reviews and verify reports and schedules prepared by other department staff.
Participates in Credit Union management and profit planning through participation on the Asset/Liability Management Committee and in the annual budget process.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Serve as a resource for Credit Union managers and staff through effective use of accounting expertise, communication skills, and process knowledge.
Lead initiatives and perform research in resolving issues associated with accounting and financial reporting.
Periodically reconciles or reviews miscellaneous Asset, Liability, and Capital activity to corresponding general ledger accounts to locate and correct any errors.
Updates knowledge and develops professionally on a continuing basis. Participates in internal and external training and development as required.
Coordinates, monitors and reviews the collection of financial data and supporting schedules for miscellaneous audits (i.e. sales & use tax) as needed.
Perform other duties as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
Education: Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or other business-related fields.
Experience: Five years of previous experience in bank/credit union accounting is desired.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities, Licenses, etc.: Must possess courteous and professional customer service attitude; ability to analyze data, identify issues, apply independent judgment, and provide practical solutions; ability to plan, organize and prioritize work; proficiency in Microsoft Office and database software applications. Ability to work with confidential information, materials, and files appropriately, professionally, & discreetly.
Physical Requirements: Able to work independently and as part of a team. Able to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time. Ability to demonstrate and apply manual dexterity to operate office equipment. Ability to view computer monitor or laptop screen for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions: Fast-paced Office Environment. Frequent mental and visual concentration is necessary for listening and responding to various situations, and computer usage. Work hours are generally during normal business hours and average at least 40 hours a week. Position may require some unscheduled evening and weekend work. Occasional out-of-town and overnight business travel may be required. Ability to adapt easily to changing work schedules.
