Director of Engineering - Building Envelope - Base Salary to 200k/year - Hammonton, NJ
Our client is looking for a Director of Engineering to define our engineering strategy, build and nurture high-performing teams, and oversee a portfolio of innovative specialty materials from concept to commercialization. The Director of Engineering will be responsible for developing a multi-year engineering roadmap, aligning engineering investments with business objectives, and scaling processes to enhance quality, speed, and cost-effectiveness.
Responsibilities:
Own the multi-year engineering and technology roadmap that aligns with company strategy and revenue targets; translate this strategy into clear annual plans and budgets.
Lead product portfolio management, including gate reviews and make/buy/partner decisions, to prioritize the highest-value opportunities.
Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for innovation velocity, cost, quality, and customer outcomes; report progress to the executive team as needed.
Build scalable engineering operations, including capacity planning, vendor/partner management, standard work processes, and documentation (PLM, revision control).
Oversee in-house and third-party qualification testing and certification, ensuring results are documented and actionable across the organization.
Collaborate with Manufacturing to drive design-for-manufacture/assembly (DFM/DFA), yield improvements, and cost reductions.
Ensure robust Quality Management System practices; lead and prepare for certification audits and continuous improvement initiatives (lean/six sigma mindset).
Build and develop a multidisciplinary engineering organization that includes mechanical, materials, testing/validation, and drafting/CAD teams.
Hire, coach, and plan for succession in key roles; set clear expectations, career paths, and learning plans.
Promote a customer-first, data-driven, best-in-class culture aligned with company core values.
Oversee all engineering aspects of research and development (R&D) and new product development; define product requirements, target cost of goods sold (COGS), reliability goals, and field installation experiences in partnership with Product, Operations, and Sales teams.
Stay ahead of emerging construction technologies, materials, and codes to inform the roadmap and competitive positioning.
Serve as a senior technical voice for architects, contractors, owners, and certification bodies to ensure that specifications, codes, and safety requirements are met.
Collaborate with Marketing and Business Development to shape go-to-market narratives, technical content, and competitive differentiation.
Sponsor the creation of installation manuals, submittals, and technical guides; ensure field feedback loops inform product iterations.
Manage the engineering budget, vendor contracts, and capital recommendations.
Oversee code compliance, regulatory changes, and product safety risks; maintain a proactive stance on the standards that impact products.
Qualifications:
Proven success in leading engineering organizations within the manufacturing sector (specifically related to building products or similar fields).
Demonstrated leadership skills in hiring, coaching, performance management, and overseeing portfolios/budgets.
Strong ability to collaborate across functions, working effectively with Operations, Sales/Marketing, and external stakeholders (such as architects, contractors, and certification agencies).
Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and digital) along with the ability to produce executive reports.
Experience in leading an organization's Quality Management System.
A bachelor's degree in engineering is required.
Compensation:
Base salary in the 165k - 200k/year range plus bonus
