    • Our client is looking for a Director of Engineering to define our engineering strategy, build and nurture high-performing teams, and oversee a portfolio of innovative specialty materials from concept to commercialization. The Director of Engineering will be responsible for developing a multi-year engineering roadmap, aligning engineering investments with business objectives, and scaling processes to enhance quality, speed, and cost-effectiveness.

    Responsibilities:

    • Own the multi-year engineering and technology roadmap that aligns with company strategy and revenue targets; translate this strategy into clear annual plans and budgets.
    • Lead product portfolio management, including gate reviews and make/buy/partner decisions, to prioritize the highest-value opportunities.
    • Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for innovation velocity, cost, quality, and customer outcomes; report progress to the executive team as needed.
    • Build scalable engineering operations, including capacity planning, vendor/partner management, standard work processes, and documentation (PLM, revision control).
    • Oversee in-house and third-party qualification testing and certification, ensuring results are documented and actionable across the organization.
    • Collaborate with Manufacturing to drive design-for-manufacture/assembly (DFM/DFA), yield improvements, and cost reductions.
    • Ensure robust Quality Management System practices; lead and prepare for certification audits and continuous improvement initiatives (lean/six sigma mindset).
    • Build and develop a multidisciplinary engineering organization that includes mechanical, materials, testing/validation, and drafting/CAD teams.
    • Hire, coach, and plan for succession in key roles; set clear expectations, career paths, and learning plans.
    • Promote a customer-first, data-driven, best-in-class culture aligned with company core values.
    • Oversee all engineering aspects of research and development (R&D) and new product development; define product requirements, target cost of goods sold (COGS), reliability goals, and field installation experiences in partnership with Product, Operations, and Sales teams.
    • Stay ahead of emerging construction technologies, materials, and codes to inform the roadmap and competitive positioning.
    • Serve as a senior technical voice for architects, contractors, owners, and certification bodies to ensure that specifications, codes, and safety requirements are met.
    • Collaborate with Marketing and Business Development to shape go-to-market narratives, technical content, and competitive differentiation.
    • Sponsor the creation of installation manuals, submittals, and technical guides; ensure field feedback loops inform product iterations.
    • Manage the engineering budget, vendor contracts, and capital recommendations.
    • Oversee code compliance, regulatory changes, and product safety risks; maintain a proactive stance on the standards that impact products.

    Qualifications:

    • Proven success in leading engineering organizations within the manufacturing sector (specifically related to building products or similar fields).
    • Demonstrated leadership skills in hiring, coaching, performance management, and overseeing portfolios/budgets.
    • Strong ability to collaborate across functions, working effectively with Operations, Sales/Marketing, and external stakeholders (such as architects, contractors, and certification agencies).
    • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and digital) along with the ability to produce executive reports.
    • Experience in leading an organization's Quality Management System.
    • A bachelor's degree in engineering is required.
