Job Description - Director of Human Resources
Targeted Comp Range - Up to $185K + 10% bonus (depending on experience)
Position Summary
This is a fast-scaling, high-volume staffing and security services organization operating across multiple states, with significant seasonal workforce surges tied to large-scale events. The Director of Human Resources is responsible for running the company’s human resources department under executive leadership (ie. Chief Legal/Compliance Officer "CLO") while partnering with operations to protect the company, support business objectives, strengthen organizational culture, improve employee engagement, and ensure compliance with applicable employment rules and regulations — enabling rapid, seasonal growth.
This role serves as a strategic partner and oversees all day-to-day functions of human resources operations, including employee relations, talent acquisition, performance management, compensation and benefits, HR policies and procedures, compliance, workforce planning, and organizational development for a large, diverse, frontline workforce. The ideal candidate is a hands-on HR leader who can balance strategic initiatives with day-to-day operational needs in a fast-paced environment. Role will have 3 direct reports with a total team size of 23.
Location: Hybrid – must go into Orange County office 2-3 days per week.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Employee Relations & Workplace Culture
• Foster a positive and high-performing workplace culture built on accountability, communication, and employee engagement.
• Provide guidance and support regarding employee relations matters, including performance issues, workplace conflicts, investigations, disciplinary actions, and employee separations.
• Conduct workplace investigations (with CLO guidance/support) while ensuring consistency, fairness, confidentiality, and compliance with applicable laws.
• Develop programs to improve employee engagement, retention, morale, and overall employee experience.
• Coach managers on effective leadership practices, employee communication, and performance management.
• Build strong, trusted relationships with field operations leaders across multiple regions to ensure HR support reaches frontline teams.
Employment Law & Compliance
• Ensure compliance with federal, state (California experience necessary), and local employment laws and regulations, including meal and rest break requirements, wage and hour and timekeeping compliance, workplace safety obligations, leave laws, anti-discrimination laws, and other applicable requirements.
• Maintain and update employee handbooks, HR policies, procedures, and internal practices.
• Partner with CLO as needed regarding employment matters, litigation support, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation.
• Monitor changes in employment practices and implement necessary updates to company practices.
Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning
• Oversee recruitment strategies to attract, hire, and retain top talent.
• Manage and mentor a Recruiting Manager and team, scaling headcount from the hundreds to several thousand during peak seasonal periods tied to large-scale events.
• Build strategic, creative sourcing pipelines that go beyond traditional recruiting channels.
• Develop and improve recruiting processes, interviewing practices, onboarding procedures, and workforce planning initiatives.
• Partner with hiring managers to identify staffing needs and build effective recruitment strategies.
• Ensure consistent onboarding and integration processes for new employees.
Performance Management & Employee Development
• Design and administer performance management programs that promote accountability and professional growth.
• Develop training and development initiatives to enhance employee skills and leadership capabilities.
• Support managers in setting goals, conducting performance reviews, and addressing performance concerns.
• Identify opportunities for career development and employee advancement.
Compensation, Benefits & HR Operations
• Oversee compensation practices, benefits administration, and employee programs to ensure competitiveness and compliance.
• Partner with payroll and benefits providers to ensure accurate and timely administration.
• Evaluate compensation structures and recommend improvements based on market conditions and business needs.
• Maintain accurate HR records, reporting systems, and employee documentation.
HR Technology & Reporting
• Manage and optimize HR information systems (HRIS) and related technology platforms, including driving adoption and full utilization of a new HRIS/ADP implementation, applicant tracking system (ATS), and learning management system (LMS).
• Develop HR dashboards and reporting tools to measure workforce trends, turnover, hiring metrics, compliance, and employee engagement.
• Use data analytics to identify opportunities for improvement and support business decisions.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or related field.
• 7+ years of progressive human resources experience, including leadership responsibility.
• Demonstrated experience managing employee relations, compliance, recruiting, and HR operations.
• Experience in a high-volume, multi-state workforce environment (staffing, hospitality, events, entertainment, or similar industries with large seasonal fluctuations), including managing or scaling a recruiting function through periods of rapid, seasonal headcount change.
• Collaborative, approachable leadership style, with the ability to build trust and rapport across a young, diverse, frontline employee base.
• Strong knowledge of federal and state employment laws and HR best practices.
• Proven ability to advise executives and influence leaders at all levels of an organization.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in sensitive situations.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience supporting organizations undergoing growth, restructuring, or operational change.
• Experience implementing HR systems, processes, and organizational improvements.
• Experience managing HR teams or external/outsourced general HR resources.
• Experience in the security services industry is a plus, but not required.
