Director of Learning Design
1 Position Overview
Starting Salary Range: $80,000 - $120,000 Annually Location: Lower 48 US states Employment Type: Full-time, Remote
As the Director of Learning Design, you will report to the Executive Vice President (EVP). Your primary responsibility will be to lead the development and implementation of educational programs related to energy. You will design and develop comprehensive electrical power systems and energy system curriculum materials, including lesson plans, assessments, and instructional resources. You will collaborate with energy industry experts to identify emerging trends, technologies, and practices that should be incorporated into curricula. You will assure the quality of the materials developed and enter the developed course materials into a learning management system (LMS), coordinating with the VP to address technical issues as they arise. You will handle day-to-day interactions with students, review and grade assignments, and lead train-the-trainers and recitations. You will track student progress and course completion and monitor and communicate key performance indicators to the Partners and clients.
The ideal candidate for this role will possess a deep understanding of the energy industry, as well as strong leadership and project management skills. They should also have experience in curriculum development, instructional design, and adult education. Strong communication and collaboration skills are critical for success in this role, as is the ability to wear many hats. This is a key hire that will be given significant responsibility. The role is perfect for a dynamic self-starter with a desire to grow and manage a team.
The ProtoGen team works remotely and communicates via Microsoft Teams and email. You’ll communicate regularly with the team and attend meetings (primarily virtually) with clients, ensuring that you present a professional demeanor that inspires confidence. Some travel is required. You will submit expense reports for travel and per-dim expenditures related to customer site visits, as necessary. A rental car will be provided or mileage will be reimbursed at a rate corresponding to IRS standard mileage.
2 Remote Work
This is a remote work opportunity. Candidates living in (or relocating to) Southeastern Pennsylvania, the Lehigh Valley (PA), and South Jersey are preferred, but we are willing to accommodate the right candidate. Some travel will be required.
3 Key Responsibilities
3.1 Customer Engagement/Stakeholder Engagement
Support the Partners in meetings with clients and prospects
Identify and engage the relevant stakeholders (e.g., industry partners, subject matter experts, codes and standards organizations) to solicit their input and feedback
Work with the Partners and clients to develop and refine program requirements and learning objectives, building consensus among all project stakeholders
3.2 Curriculum Design and Development
Design or revise course structures to meet the program requirements
Develop and review curriculum content, sourcing images and relevant code sections and ensuring that they are properly cited
Develop PowerPoint slides for presentation of course lessons, labs, and assignments
Create banks of assessment questions
Review course materials to ensure that they are pedagogically sound and engaging for students and trainers
3.3 Educational Video Production
Write scripts for educational content and use them to record a presentation of the material
Edit the video to achieve a polished result (typically using a “slide with talking head” format)
Ensure that the video metadata is correct and upload to the specified content repository
3.4 Support Course Build-Out
Load course materials into the LMS
Built out course structure, course pages, and assessment questions
Test courses to assure continuity and a seamless user experience
Work with subcontractors, as needed
3.5 Course Administration
Serve as primary point of contact for students
Review and grade assignments
Schedule and lead train-the-trainer sessions and recitations, as necessary
Track student progress and course completion, communicating both to Partners and clients, as appropriate
Notify the VP of any technical challenges and work with them to develop and implement a solution
Monitor key performance indicators and generate periodic reporting
4 Qualifications
4.1 Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in related field (e.g., education, electrical engineering or other energy-related field) or relevant experience (e.g., journeyman card, electrical instructor)
Proficient with MS Office (advanced PowerPoint proficiency preferred) and image editing software such as Photoshop
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong knowledge of electrical construction and worker safety including relevant codes and standards
Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills
Comfortable and efficient working remotely
Access to a professional setting to record videos and conduct meetings from
4.2 Preferred Qualifications
5-10 years of experience in the energy or electrical industries
Direct training experience preferred but not necessary
Degree in education
Energy storage, microgrid, and EV infrastructure subject matter expertise
Able to research and absorb new technical topics
Strong data management and documentation skills
Video editing
Advanced proficiency with Davinci Resolve (or equal) and Photoshop
4.3 Technical Skills & Knowledge
Knowledge of distributed and renewable energy technologies such as microgrids, PV, wind, generators, CHP, energy storage, and green hydrogen, electric vehicle infrastructure; including their general characteristics and applications
Knowledge of energy concepts such as sustainability, resiliency, energy justice, master planning
Experience using and teaching NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, and other related industry codes and standards
Experience with curriculum design, syllabus creation, learning objective and task analysis creation
Experience with (or ability to learn) learning management systems and basic web development
Experience building successful working relationships with project teams and customers
Experience managing multiple concurrent projects

The annual base salary range of $80,000 – $120,000 reflects a range of salaries across the country for this role. The salary ultimately offered for this position will be informed by criteria including but not limited to the scope, complexity, and location of the role and the skills, education, training, credentials, and experience of the candidate.
