Director of Operations – Civil / Excavation Contractor

Director of Operations – Civil / Excavation Contractor

Location: Northern Utah Compensation: Competitive base salary + significant performance-based bonus Reports to: President Direct Reports: Field Operations Manager, Estimating, Accounting / Project Administration

    About the Role

We are hiring a Director of Operations to take full ownership of day-to-day operations, priorities, and performance across a growing civil / excavation business.

This role is designed to be the operational leader of the company. The Director of Operations is expected to run the business through clear priorities, disciplined decision-making, and accountability across field operations, estimating, equipment, trucking, and financial performance.

This position exists to replace owner involvement in daily operational decisions with a strong, accountable operations leader.

This is not a project management role. It is a senior operations leadership role with real authority.

Direct excavation experience is valuable but not required. We welcome leaders from adjacent industries such as utilities, paving, concrete, equipment rental, trucking, logistics, or industrial services.

    What You Will Own

Day-to-day operational leadership of the business

Work selection, pricing direction, and backlog composition

    Margin performance and operational outcomes

    Project prioritization and capacity allocation

Decisions on use of internal resources versus outside support (including trucking)

Operational risk management, including insurance and bonding coordination

Alignment between what is sold, what is built, and what is billed

You will be expected to make decisions, set direction, and own outcomes without relying on owner intervention.

    Who This Role Is For

This role is a strong fit for someone who has:

    Led operations in a field-executed, asset-heavy business

Owned margins, priorities, and outcomes across multiple functions

Made hard tradeoffs without needing constant escalation

Built credibility with field leaders through judgment and consistency

    What Matters Most

    Independent decision-making

    Comfort operating without owner involvement

    Clear prioritization under pressure

    Early risk identification and escalation

Respect for field execution and frontline leadership

Formal education is not required. Proven ownership and accountability matter more.

    What Success Looks Like

    Predictable, profitable execution

Clear visibility into margins and risks

Minimal owner involvement in daily decisions

Strong alignment across estimating, field, equipment, trucking, and accounting

A business that runs consistently whether the President is present or not

    Compensation & Benefits

    Competitive base salary

Significant performance-based bonus tied to company results

    Vehicle allowance and standard benefits
