Position Overview
The Director of Social Enterprises provides strategic and operational leadership across a portfolio of mission-driven businesses. This role is responsible for driving performance, strengthening systems, developing leaders, and ensuring that enterprise operations advance both financial sustainability and social impact outcomes.
This is a senior leadership role for a highly capable operator who can balance business rigor with compassion, accountability with development, and structure with mission.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Strategy & Performance
Lead the strategic direction and operational execution of multiple social enterprises.
Translate organizational priorities into clear operating plans and performance metrics.
Identify opportunities for revenue growth, operational efficiency, and enterprise scalability.
Monitor and report on enterprise KPIs, including revenue, margins, customer experience, and workforce outcomes.
Support evaluation and launch of new or expanded earned-revenue initiatives.
Operational Leadership
Provide oversight and coaching to enterprise leaders and managers.
Ensure consistency, quality, and accountability across all business units.
Partner with Finance and Operations on budgeting, forecasting, and P&L management.
Ensure compliance with all applicable labor, safety, licensing, and regulatory requirements.
People & Workforce Development
Build strong leadership pipelines within enterprise operations.
Support workforce development and apprenticeship pathways embedded within enterprise models.
Foster a culture of dignity, accountability, and psychological safety.
Partner with People Operations to support hiring, onboarding, performance management, and corrective action.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with internal teams including Finance, Facilities, Marketing, Development, and People Operations.
Support earned-revenue storytelling and impact reporting for funders and stakeholders.
Ensure social enterprises are aligned with organizational systems and strategic goals.
External & Community Engagement
Represent enterprise operations with external partners, vendors, and stakeholders as needed.
Support partnerships that strengthen workforce pipelines, customer reach, and community impact.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Operations, Hospitality, Nonprofit Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).
7+ years of progressive leadership experience in social enterprise, hospitality, food service, retail, or mission-driven business environments.
Demonstrated experience leading multi-unit or multi-function operations.
Strong financial acumen, including budgeting and performance management.
Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop managers.
Experience working in community-centered or workforce development environments.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree (MBA, MPA, or related field).
Experience in nonprofit or hybrid social enterprise models.
Familiarity with second-chance employment, apprenticeship, or workforce development programs.
Experience leading organizations through growth, change, or operational transformation.
