A long-standing, multi-state civil engineering and surveying firm is seeking a Licensed Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in New Jersey to step into a leadership role as their current Director of Surveying transitions into retirement. This is a rare succession opportunity to take the reins of a stable, talented team and lead survey operations across the East Coast.

    What They’re Looking For:

This firm is searching for a seasoned PLS who is ready to lead – someone who thrives in a management role, is comfortable with client interaction, and is confident signing and sealing work. You’ll oversee a group of 13+ professionals in the NJ survey department (field crews, PMs, drafters both in-office and remote) and help shape the next chapter for the team.

    Role Highlights:

    • Lead a Team: 3–4 Party Chiefs, 2 Project Managers, and a support staff of 13–15 survey professionals across NJ and MI.
    • Regional Ownership: Run survey operations across the tri-state area, with a focus on private-sector commercial work (some public sprinkled in).
    • High-Impact Leadership: Mentor junior staff, represent the team in client meetings, ensure quality deliverables, and contribute to department growth and strategy.
    • Hands-On: Expect to be involved in technical oversight, QA/QC, boundary decisions, and client coordination.
    • Collaborative Culture: Work alongside a hybrid team (some based in Long Island, Oklahoma, and Michigan) but serve as the boots-on-the-ground leader in NJ.

    Ideal Candidate:

    • NJ PLS license is required.
    • 10+ years of progressive survey experience, including team leadership and project oversight.
    • Strong communication skills – able to work with clients, staff, and executives alike.
    • Comfortable with remote collaboration but committed to being based in New Jersey (ideally Rutherford or Asbury Park/Princeton).
    • Able to balance technical expertise with business acumen and team development.

    Why This Role?

This is not just a job — it’s a succession opportunity. You’ll be stepping into a seat that’s been well-respected and well-supported, with the ability to make it your own. The team is stable, motivated, and ready for fresh leadership. And the company? Competitive, flexible, and genuinely invested in setting you up to succeed.
