    DRA, a national nonprofit disability rights legal center, is seeking an experienced HR professional to join our executive team, lead our HR practices, and promote a diverse and inclusive culture.

    Disability Rights Advocates (DRA) is a non-profit, disability rights legal center. We advance equal rights and opportunities for people with a wide range of disabilities through high-impact litigation utilizing federal, state, and local disability law. With offices in New York and California, DRA fights for equal access and dramatic improvements for people with disabilities in all areas of life, including: technology, health care, employment, transportation, education, voting, juvenile justice, and housing. With a high success rate for nearly 30 years and more than 500 cases, DRA continues to take on significant and novel cases to achieve a meaningful impact for people with disabilities across the nation.

    The HR Director creates and administers HR practices that reflect DRA’s mission and values, provides efficient and responsive support to DRA’s 27 employees, and will foster a highly engaged workforce. This is a hands-on HR Director position, developing and administering HR policies and programs not only to ensure legal compliance, but to advance the organization’s mission and talent strategy. Under the leadership of a new CEO and with a new strategic direction focused on diversity, equity and inclusion this position presents an opportunity for organization-wide impact.

    Key responsibilities include:

    1. HR Management. Partner with the CEO and leadership team to develop and execute the organization’s human resource strategy and strong union relations. Develop and implement policies, processes, and initiatives to support DRA’s human resource strategy and organizational change.

    2. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Develop and execute strategies to foster and ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of employment at DRA. Monitor and report on DEI efforts and results in DRA’s employment policies and practices.

    3. Disability Support. Provides leadership and proactive support for the interactive process to ensure reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities are readily available. Ensures timely response and documentation.

    4. Recruiting. Develops and manages the talent acquisition process, which includes recruitment, interviewing, selection, hiring, and onboarding. Ensures process results in diverse, qualified job applicants.

    5. Employee Relations and Development. Collaborates with leadership on matters of law and policy related to union relations and the negotiation process. Assists in developing proposals and evaluating union proposals. Plan and implement programs to strengthen DRA’s culture and performance, including recognition programs, surveys, staff communications, staff training/retreats/meetings, and internal events.

    6. HR Administration. Ensures accurate and efficient administration of compensation and benefits. Ensures DRA’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations. Ensures HR policies and procedures promote employee engagement and positive employee relations, and model DRA’s mission and values.

    Compensation and Benefits

    This is a 30-hour/week position with full benefits. Benefits are top shelf, including top tier medical/dental, vision, long term care insurance, 401k, and generous holiday and paid-time-off.

    This position can be based in the Berkeley office or the New York City office, with occasional travel required. During the COVID-19 pandemic, all DRA employees have been temporarily working remotely. When our offices reopen after September 2021, we will provide a remote-friendly workplace with flexibility to partially work from home.

    Summary of Qualifications:

    • 5+ years' experience in an exempt human resource role, or equivalent. Experience with a multi-state workforce is a plus.
    • Must have broad and detailed understanding of the current state of employment law (both Federal and California law) and Human Resources practices, as demonstrated by a degree in Human Resources or professional certification such as PHR/SPHR.
    • Must be knowledgeable about Disability Accomodation and experienced with reasonable accommodations and the interactive process.
    • Experience working with a diverse workforce and fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
    • Experience working with unionized employees is a plus, but not a requirement.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Highly organized, with high reliability and follow through.
    • Personal connection/lived experience with disability and/or the disability community is a plus.
    • Occasional travel required.
