    JOB SUMMARY

    The Claims Attorney and Manager will provide legal representation to personal lines and commercial lines policyholders of Donegal Mutual Insurance Company and affiliated insurance companies before trial and appellate courts and in arbitration and mediation. The Claims Attorney and Manager will be responsible for handling all aspects of litigation – pleadings, discovery, motions, settlement analysis and negotiations, trial and appeal - and will need to deliver high-quality representation of our insured policyholders in compliance with all applicable rules of professional conduct, rules of procedure and rules of court.

    Additionally, the Claims Attorney and Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing and leading the Staff Counsel Department which will include training and supervision of other attorneys and legal staff colleagues and management of all day-to-day operations of the Staff Counsel Department. We are looking for a self-motivated attorney who has the ability to work independently as well as with a team, and use his or her experience to lead a new segment of our Company.

    The Claims Attorney and Manager will fully and effectively utilize available technology, case management systems and automation, demonstrate a personal commitment to professional development, and maintain a highly-productive case volume and an organized and proactive approach to case management.

    This is a full-time, exempt position at our Marietta, PA headquarters. The preferred candidate will live in the surrounding areas and work from the office daily. Candidates who reside within a reasonable commuting distance will be considered if they can be in the office a minimum of three (3) days per week.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

    • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
    • Active license to practice law in Pennsylvania required.
    • Active license to practice law in Delaware and/or Maryland preferred.
    • Minimum six (6) years of intensive, high-volume insurance defense litigation experience (in-court civil trial and appellate experience, discovery, depositions, and both federal and state court experience).
    • Minimum three (3) years of successful supervisory or managerial experience.
    • Ability to work independently while leading a team with strong attention to detail, along with the ability to organize and prioritize your own workload while managing a voluminous docket of cases for assignment to yourself or other staff counsel.
    • Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to identify risks with strong understanding of all applicable ethical duties.
    • Ability to work effectively with clients and customers and negotiate on their behalf.
    • Ability to work through conflict and resolve issues with a professional demeanor.
    • Possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to provide concise, practical advice to clients.
    • Proficiency with computer-based applications and systems.
