    Job Summary

    The urgent care DVM will be responsible for seeing low acuity cases on an appointment basis. These cases are both self-screened and undergo limited screening by CSR staff. This position manages a diverse caseload of urgent cases, employs critical thinking in order to integrate with and assist the emergency room flow and maintains a positive and respectful attitude. A genuine love of and respect for all animals is required, as is an appreciation of the human-animal bond.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Perform initial patient evaluation and medical management of patients for the Urgent Care service.
    • Communicate examination findings and treatment plan, patient care alternatives, and possible medical ramifications to clients.
    • Inform clients of deposit needed and estimated cost of services; update clients if costs are exceeding estimate.
    • Transfer unstable patients to the ER DVM as needed, and relay history and physical examination results, as well as any treatments already undertaken.
    • When appointments are not completely full, or if time is available during procedure time, the urgent care DVM will see patients on a Fast Track basis from the ER.
    • Collaborate with the Urgent Care Assistant to complete tasks outside of the usual DVM role in the interest of moving patients quickly through the Urgent Care service.
    • Follow DoveLewis policies and procedures for patient care and administrative procedures and direct technical staff on the hospital floor to ensure proper patient care and communication with front desk.
    • Develop and maintain good working relationships with rDVMs; promptly provide rDVMs with thorough case summaries.
    • Document case summaries, medical procedures and notes, diagnosis, and client and rDVM communications into ezyVet.
    • Positively represent DoveLewis in the professional community and to the general public.
    • Stay up-to-date with new medical information, attend continuing education to keep up with state and AAHA requirements, and keep license current.

    Supervisory Responsibilities
    While this position does not have any direct reports, this position is expected to be a leader and is responsible for directing the medical procedures and flow of work during shifts for their assistant, and for other members of the floor as needed.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Understanding of a client-centered practice.
    • Diagnostic and technical skills to handle urgent medical situations and emergent patients.
    • Working knowledge of veterinary computer systems to input charges and other client/animal information.
    • Teamwork and interpersonal skills to work in cooperative and close fashion within critical care environment, and effectively communicate with clients and DVMs.
    • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
    • Ability to make decisions and communicate clearly and effectively with fellow team members.
    • Ability to lead support staff and direct work.
    • Ability to deal with stressful environments positively and keep team focused.
    • Ability to teach medical procedures and impart medical knowledge to support staff, interns, and externs.
    • Ability to have a flexible schedule and work varied shifts as needed, including holidays.

    Education and Experience

    • Current Veterinarian license in good standing to practice in Oregon required.
    • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine or certification through ECFVG required.
    • Minimum of two years of clinical experience in a veterinary hospital; prior urgent care or emergency experience preferred. Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training may substitute.
