Driver Job Description – Group Home (Direct Support Driver)
Job Title: Driver / Direct Support Staff Reports To: QDDP Employment Type: Full-Time or Part-Time
Position Summary
The Driver/Direct Support Staff is responsible for safely transporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to medical appointments, community outings, employment, recreational activities, and other approved destinations. This position also provides direct support services that promote independence, dignity, safety, and community inclusion while ensuring compliance with agency policies and state regulations.
Essential Job Duties
Safely transport individuals to scheduled appointments and activities.
Assist individuals entering and exiting the vehicle when needed.
Follow all traffic laws and practice defensive driving.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Document transportation logs, and any incidents.
Assist individuals with community integration, shopping, recreational activities, and appointments.
Provide companionship and supervision during outings.
Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding schedule changes or concerns.
Complete required documentation accurately and timely.
Follow agency policies regarding medication transportation, emergencies, and individual rights.
Vehicle Requirements
Employees in this position are required to use their personal vehicle for transporting individuals served by the agency.
The employee must:
Maintain a reliable, safe, and clean personal vehicle suitable for transporting individuals.
Maintain current automobile liability insurance meeting or exceeding Alabama minimum requirements.
Possess a valid Alabama driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Keep vehicle registration current.
Provide proof of insurance and registration before employment and whenever policies are renewed.
Immediately notify the agency of any suspension, revocation, lapse in insurance, or change in driving status.
Allow the agency to conduct periodic Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) checks.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Minimum age of 21 years preferred.
Valid Alabama driver's license.
Clean driving record.
Current automobile insurance.
Ability to pass criminal background screening and drug screening.
CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements
Prolonged sitting while driving.
Frequent entering and exiting vehicles.
Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Work Schedule
Hours may include:
Days
Evenings
Weekends
Holidays
On-call assignments as needed
Mileage Reimbursement
Employees using their personal vehicle for approved agency business may be eligible for mileage reimbursement in accordance with agency policy and IRS guidelines.
Acknowledgment
Failure to maintain a valid driver's license, current automobile insurance, reliable transportation, or an acceptable driving record may result in removal from driving duties and could affect continued employment.
