    PHLEBOTOMIST QUALIFICATIONS:

    • High School graduate or GED equivalent
    • Completion of phlebotomy training program from accredited institution
    • Phlebotomy certification from nationally accredited agency
    • Current BLS certification
    • Skills in written and oral communication including telephone and customer relations
    • Knowledge and ability to use a variety of computer software programs and equipment
    • Must be able to pass extensive security background check and credentialing process to include urine drug screening test.
    • Must be able to provide three (3) Supervisory references that can speak to performance in this role.

    EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Phlebotomists must have at least three (3) years of phlebotomy experience in clinical setting.
    • Must have minimum one (1) year of experience drawing 50 to 80 patients per eight-hour shift with at least 95% success rate. (Experience must be current within last 6 months)

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Performs venipuncture, specimen collection, packaging and processing
    • Checks expiration dates of supplies
    • Checks instruments and equipment for maintenance, needed repairs and replacement
    • Receives and directs patients and visitors and responds to routine inquiries
    • Receives and processes telephone calls for other sections of the laboratory
    • Phlebotomists are required to respond to telephone and in-person inquiries from patients, visitors and employees in a courteous, respectful, and efficient manner and will communicate effectively orally and in writing with all Medical Center personnel and customers.
    • Performs a variety of administrative duties including but not limited to faxing, electronic copying and other technical activities
    • Performs positive patient identification and assures that patient’s demographic information is accurate
    • Electronically search lab orders from providers.
    • Adheres to principles of infection control, safety and universal precautions
    • Participates in performance improvement initiatives and strives to elevate the practice standards in the clinic
    • Adjusts own assignment to assist in emergencies or unusual, unplanned situations
    • Demonstrate appropriate behavior (i.e. respect, civility, accept constructive criticism)
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
    • Instructs patients on sample collection such as 24-hour urine collection, fecal occult blood and other stool examinations, sputum, first morning void urine collection.
    • Follows instructions annotated on labels for special collection and practices techniques in avoiding pre-analytical errors in sample collection, universal precaution, and infection control policies.
    • Adheres to Medical Center and laboratory policies, safety and infection control regulations such as hand washing, hours of duty, dress code.
    • Adhere to HIPAA and VA Information Security policies and regulations
    • Maintains awareness of changes in procedures and protocols and retains knowledge

    SHIFT:

    Training will be FT and at the Lowell, MA location to be credentialed and able to work amongst additional sites - additional trainings may be set up as needed in other locations.

    This is a Per Diem (as needed) position phlebotomists will be on eight-hour tour when called upon to provide coverage at one of the locations above. 

    FACILITY DAYS AND HOURS OF OPERATION: Monday to Friday, 4:00 AM to 11:00 PM, including weekends and federal holidays. Shifts differ generally between 7/7:30am - 4/4:30pm.
