GENERAL PURPOSE:
Responsible for assigning codes to diagnoses and procedures for hospice medical records using current International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding classification systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Apply coding expertise for diagnoses with the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal and state regulations
- Knowledge of reimbursement models applicable to hospice
- Knowledge of components of medical record
- Apply professional knowledge of disease processes and medical terminology
- Use critical thinking skills to assign codes to meet various payment groupings and medical necessity
- Ongoing review and adherence to a multitude of regulatory requirements that are constantly changing
- Meet productivity and quality standards
- Maintain certification as Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Home Care Coding Specialist – Hospice (HCD-H) by fulfilling education requirements.

- Minimum of one year of prior hospice coding.
- Prior coding classification education preferred.
