GENERAL PURPOSE:

Responsible for assigning codes to diagnoses and procedures for hospice medical records using current International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding classification systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Apply coding expertise for diagnoses with the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal and state regulations
2. Knowledge of reimbursement models applicable to hospice
3. Knowledge of components of medical record
4. Apply professional knowledge of disease processes and medical terminology
5. Use critical thinking skills to assign codes to meet various payment groupings and medical necessity
6. Ongoing review and adherence to a multitude of regulatory requirements that are constantly changing
7. Meet productivity and quality standards
8. Maintain certification as Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Home Care Coding Specialist – Hospice (HCD-H) by fulfilling education requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Excellent written and verbal communication.

3. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
4. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
5. Minimum of one year of prior hospice coding.
6. Prior coding classification education preferred.
