    Summary

    The EMS Engineer – Level II is responsible for applying a solid understanding of energy management and building automation systems from a controls engineering perspective. Working under the direction of the Engineering Manager, Engineering Team Leaders, Project Managers, and senior EMS Engineers (Level III), this role is expected to execute engineering tasks in compliance with the company’s Installation and Commissioning Standards.

    In addition to performing all Level I responsibilities, the EMS Engineer – Level II independently produces complete engineering submittals, updates company standards, and demonstrates a working knowledge of control protocols, system integrations, and WebCTRL configurations. The role requires familiarity with chilled water, hot water, and domestic water systems, as well as air pressure systems, electrical one-line diagrams, and related components.

    Level II Engineers also participate in or independently perform system start-up, commissioning, troubleshooting, and testing activities. The position requires close coordination with other trades (e.g., electricians, HVAC technicians) and the ability to manage workload according to project schedules, budgets, and priorities.

    Responsibilities

    Foundational Skills / HVAC / Electrical / Leadership
    • Independently produce complete engineering packages including submittals, databases, graphics, programming, and closeout documentation (subject to final quality check).

    • Adhere to company wire labeling standards across EMS submittals and panel drawings.

    • Demonstrate a strong understanding of thermodynamics, refrigeration, and electrical schematics, including one-line diagrams.

    • Utilize available scheduling, budgeting, and task management tools effectively.

    • Identify and resolve technical challenges proactively, developing and communicating solutions to leadership.

    • Understand and communicate temperature and humidity control principles.

    • Plan and prioritize workload efficiently to meet deadlines and budgets, requesting assistance when appropriate.

    • Respond promptly to communications and requests from colleagues and management.

    Technical Execution / Documentation / Systems Integration
    • Gather and interpret all relevant project information from sales teams, site visits, and turnover meetings.

    • Apply and promote the use of company programming libraries and engineering standards.

    • Add equipment and modules to site databases; export and import system clippings accurately.

    • Program and configure interface equipment across various communication protocols.

    • Read, write, and verify sequences of operation per project specifications or customer requirements.

    • Manage entire project databases and multi-phase programming structures independently.

    • Demonstrate understanding of mechanical piping, ductwork systems, and electrical wiring principles.

    • Maintain advanced knowledge of WebCTRL setup, source trees, conditional expressions, and network points.

    • Implement system integrations including optimum start/stop, LAN shutdown, and 4CP functions.

    • Apply strong knowledge of differential, duct, and building static pressure concepts.

    • Identify and communicate potential scope gaps or change order needs early in the project lifecycle.

    • Develop early understanding of central plant systems and their control sequences.

    • Consistently apply standard programs, symbols, and graphics for project efficiency.

    • Ensure all backups and communications are secured prior to making system changes.

    • Submit all engineering work for review prior to release, following department quality protocols.

    • Monitor project labor and material budgets, reporting deviations or opportunities for improvement.

    • Maintain close coordination with assigned Project Managers for scheduling and progress updates.

    • Document and store all project correspondence, ensuring visibility to Project Managers.

    • Keep reporting and scheduling tools current with accurate progress updates and milestones.

    • Notify the Engineering Manager of project delays or resource needs to maintain deadlines.

    • Set and track personal development goals related to skill enhancement and process improvement, sharing progress with leadership.
