Accounting Manager Insurance
The Accounting Manager for Insurance oversees financial activities for insurance and reinsurance companies under the Director, Insurance Accounting's guidance. They ensure precise and timely financial reporting, vital for mandatory filings with NAIC and state agencies. This role demands strong attention to detail, hands-on expertise in insurance accounting, and efficiency. Thriving in a fast-paced environment, meeting tight deadlines, and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders are key. Compliance with company policies and delivering accurate information aligning with corporate standards is paramount.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for the issuance of monthly financial statements (on GAAP and SAP basis) for the insurance and reinsurance entities, including any other managerial reporting or ad-hoc reporting requests from stakeholders
Responsible for yellow book filings with the NAIC, state OIR agencies, and other regulatory bodies as needed
Assist with gathering information to meet AMBEST requests
Assist in preparing for and reviewing the annual audited financial statements for our external audit
Monitor and ensure timely identification and compliance with evolving accounting guidance, provide US
GAAP and SAP interpretation, and prepare memos that document issues in a clear, logical and comprehensive manner
Communicate and explain accounting issues and evolving accounting guidance to Leadership
Prepare SAP-GAAP reconciliations and explanations
Assist management in generating financial schedules and other items for internal and external reporting
Assist with development, implementation, and maintenance of accounting policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure financial statements are in accordance with GAAP, SAP and regulatory requirements
Interface with the Company’s external auditors regarding external financial statements and accounting issues to ensure auditor agreement with Company decision on accounting, disclosures and issues
Ensure all transactions are recorded timely and accurately in the accounting system, and assist with establishing project accounting setup functions within the accounting system as required
Monitor bank covenant compliance
Support management with special projects such as the implementation of departmental policies, procedures and controls
Effectively collaborate and communicate well with employees, vendors and the CPAs or accounting firms when appropriate
Consistent follow-through and ability and flexibility to multi-task and effectively balance priorities and meet tight deadlines
Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of directors, managers and external accounting service groups
Maintain competency through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest industry developments
QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, & Skills required)
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
5 - 7 years of experience
Public accounting experience
Experience with yellow book filings and state OIR filings
Thorough understanding and exposure to GAAP and SAP, including the ability to research and apply GAAP and SAP principles
Working knowledge of financial statement preparation and presentation
Knowledge of accounting for taxes
Tax return experience a plus
Excellent management and supervisory skills
Proficient in accounting software - WorkDay system experience a plus
Ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff and management
Experience working with external auditors and other outside partners
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook)
Ability to multi-task and work under pressure and thrive in a fast-paced results-oriented environment
