BASIC FUNCTION:
Erie Neighborhood House is seeking a part-time ABE Instructor for its Little Village site; this is an evening position, 20 hour a week. Class time is Monday through Thursday, 6pm-9pm with 5 hours of paid prep time. Responsible for helping to develop and implement a content based curriculum that incorporates reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and career readiness for a classroom of 20 students in Little Village. Lessons will be taught in a collaborative classroom setting and will be designed to meet the language needs of advanced English students preparing for college, GED and workforce classes
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Creates curriculum and utilizes instructional strategies appropriate to the learning needs of the Adult Basic Education/General Education (ABE/GED or ELL) target group
- Evaluates, selects, and recommends textbooks
- Incorporates technology, goal setting and career readiness into curriculum
- Teaches students at various skill levels and has direct responsibility for classroom and/or laboratory instruction
- Creates a positive learning environment were students are encouraged to think and act creatively
- Uses a variety of instructional methods, materials and techniques.
- Advises and counsels students regarding course requirements, expectations, goals and progress through the program
- Assists in administering TABE assessments
- Aids in the recruitment and screening of potential students
- Aids in the retention of students
- Participate in regular Erie Neighborhood House department, curriculum meetings, task forces or committees
- Attends departmental meetings and serves on task forces or committees
- Performs other duties as assigned
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field and 2 years of experience in adult basic education for English Language Learners.
- Ability to instruct in all content areas - Math, Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, ELL, and Career Readiness.
- Knowledge and understanding of the (ABE/ELL) curriculum and general education principles of instruction and classroom management
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret student test scores (TABE) and reports
- Ability to develop individual and classroom learning objectives and assess students’ progress towards them
- Identify the need for and develop alternative learning strategies
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, on-line systems and other software
- Strong leadership skills that promote dedication, creativity, innovation, growth and retention
- Skilled in project management, the ability to meet deadlines and solve problems
- Ability to work sensitively in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty, staff, and members of the community
- Commitment to social justice and sensitivity to the assets and challenges of a diverse group of participants.
