THE APPALACHIAN CONSERVATION CORPS:
The Appalachian Conservation Corps (ACC) is a non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization, whose mission is to connect young adults to meaningful conservation service. ACC engages motivated young adults to complete challenging and impactful conservation and service projects throughout the region by working with a variety of land management agencies such as the United States Forest Service, National Park Service, and The Nature Conservancy. Interns and Crews complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs, including disaster relief if the opportunity arises.
Our programs focus on place-based learning, life skills development, appreciation of diversity, civic responsibility and career development. ACC also provides an opportunity for members to learn about the local environment, environmental issues and introduces individuals to recreation and resource management careers.
SUMMARY:
This is a 4 or 7 week program. Participants will either work on a 4 week Shenandoah Youth Corps crew at Shenandoah National Park OR on a 7 week Youth Conservation Crew at George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
All crews will consist of six youth members and two experienced and trained Crew Leaders. The crew will work with National Park Service or US Forest Service staff on projects that may include trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, improvements to recreation access, re-vegetation, and much more. Additional educational and professional development opportunities will also be included. This program focuses on engaging youth, ages 16 – 18, in meaningful learning and service opportunities. Some shared equipment is available to be borrowed for the season, though Crew Members are encouraged to have their own personal outdoor gear and equipment (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, etc).
SESSIONS:
Three sessions will be offered, Crew Members are encouraged to only participate in one session, but exceptions may be made based on position availability.
