    POSITION

    MEDICAL SOCIAL WORKER - FT

    PURPOSE OF POSITION

    The Medical Social Worker is responsible for providing support and treatment within their field of practice to patients and their families with complex emotional or social problems. This includes facilitating the understanding and resolution of challenges related to environmental stress, physical illness, and interpersonal conflict through counseling, therapy, or referral based on patient psychosocial assessments and welfare. As a vital member of the EIHC team, this role will recognize and promote the cultural diversity of the patients we serve and the people we work with.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

    • Display and promote compliance with all HIPAA laws and all safety and health rules and regulations applicable to functions and services of the clinic.
    • Provide direct service to clients and their relatives through the evaluation of social and psychological data and select appropriate social work methods for treatment.
    • Interview patients and relatives to compile psycho-social histories for documentation and entry into clinical records for the coordination of trauma in formed care with appropriate clinicians.
    • Provide indirect service to clients through program development, research, and participation in community organizations focused on relevant concerns; mental health, addiction, immigration, etc.
    • Confer with clinical staff to assess the medical, psychological and social condition and needs of client, as necessary.
    • Assess high-risk situations and symptoms regarding suicide potential, domestic violence, and child or dependent abuse.
    • Educate patients and families on community resources and make appropriate referrals related to psychosocial needs while respecting patients’ right for self-determination.
    • Complete accurate and timely documentation of client reports covering social services for inclusion in patient’s clinical records.
    • Attend and participate in training, meetings, conferences and workshops in attainment of new or advanced social work practice skills.
    • Participate in the departmental or administrative staff meetings and planning sessions
    • Serves as advocate for culturally diverse client base and refers to external community agencies as needed.
    • Responsible to be knowledgeable and comply with EIHC policies, procedures and manuals pertinent to department.
    • Participate in assigned committees and assist with special projects as directed.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor of Social work (BSW) is required, Master of Social Work preferred; must obtain Licensure within 6 months if not currently licensed required.
    • A LMSW or LISW license to practice Social Work in Iowa required.
    • One year of social work experience required.
    • Knowledge and compliance with mandatory reporting laws.
    • Professional level written and verbal communication skills are required.
    • Electronic Medical Records, Microsoft Office Suite, and general computer proficiency required.
    • Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers Certification (BLS).

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Three years of social work experience preferred.
    • Experience as a member of an interdisciplinary team preferred.
    • Previous experience in a medical clinic.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology.
    • Experience with Athena EMR.
    • Bilingual in any language.
