    MEDICAL ASSISTANT for EAR, NOSE & THROAT PHYSICIAN

    Required: past experience in covering a physician(s) is required.

    Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30-5pm. Maximum 40 hrs per week. Work hours require you to be flexible.

    Location: Chesapeake office. However, you may be asked to fill in for other nurses and work in our Virginia Beach or Suffolk location.

    JOB DESCRIPTION FOR ENT MEDICAL ASSISTANT:

    1. The assistant will take a history on all patients when putting them in the exam room which includes their chief complaint in the EMR. New patients should have a minimum of two complaints to meet insurance billing criteria. They will also update the patients medical history, current medications, pharmacy and current PCP. A minimum of three vital signs, must be documented including blood pressure, height and weight. Under demographics, ethnicity and language should be listed.

    2. All messages should be addressed by the end of the day. Call in prescriptions as needed when assisting the triage department.

    3. The assistant will report to work at least 30 minutes before the doctor starts seeing patients to prepare the exam rooms. All instruments are to be cleaned, sterilized and returned to exam rooms at the end of the morning and afternoon clinics if possible. Instruments may be left in autoclave overnight. Suction canisters should be changed weekly and prn. Exam rooms and chairs should be cleaned at the end of every shift with anti-viral spray. Exam rooms should be organized at the end of the day. Any utilized supplies should be restocked daily. Cidex changes every 14 days. Endoscopy scopes should be sterilized and put away at the end of each shift. Video equipment should be wiped down at the end of the shift. All equipment including bead warmers should be turned off at the end of each shift.

    4. The assistant will escort the last patient out of the building and lock the door if they are the last patient remaining.

    5. Remove surgical packing, splints, sutures and staples according to doctors orders. Send out specimens when necessary and fill out appropriate forms. Assist with office procedures as needed, making sure to obtain proper consent form.

    6. Coordinate appointments for cancer patients and educate them as to postoperative care (i.e.-Speech therapy, radiation therapy, peg tubes, etc.). (usually done by front desk.

    7. Inform the physicians of any schedule changes ASAP. Monitor and dispose of expired medications as needed.

    8. Monitor supplies and submit in writing to supervisor any supply needs.

    9. If the person prepping charts is on vacation or not in the office, you are responsible for prepping charts for that day.
