Our school-based program empowers more than 250,000 youth each year to tackle real-world challenges in their schools and communities by teaching eco-literacy, design, and social innovation. EcoRise seeks an individual based in Houston or San Antonio, Texas to join our dynamic, fast-paced team of change makers.

    Position Overview

    EcoRise seeks a self-motivated, highly organized, adaptable, and innovative individual with youth engagement and civic action experience for the contract position of Education Specialist. The Education Specialist will coordinate the San Antonio Mayor’s Youth Engagement Council on Climate Initiatives (MYECCI) and support student field experiences and paid internships that are part of the Building a Green Texas program in Austin and along the Texas Gulf Coast. The Youth Engagement Specialist will design and co-facilitate engaging virtual experiences for high school students and strategically foster and leverage relationships with elected officials, municipal staff, sustainability professionals and academics, and climate activists. The Youth Engagement Specialist will report to the Program Director and must be based in the San Antonio Metro Area.

    Primary ResponsibilitiesSan Antonio Mayor’s Youth Engagement Council on Climate Initiatives

    Design, refine, and evaluate a multi-faceted platform to engage San Antonio youth in the climate conversation, with a strong focus on engaging youth of color and students that have been historically underrepresented in the environmental movement.

    Engage MYECCI youth in supporting and promoting the City of San Antonio’s ambitious Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP) and connect students to local initiatives and activities that support the CAAP.

    Coordinate all related activities, including but not limited to the youth climate summit, field experiences, monthly virtual check-ins with students.

    Engage with teachers to share the work their students are doing and provide opportunities for engagement with EcoRise programs and resources.

    Create and disseminate digital assets for students and teachers.

    Foster and leverage local networks to connect youth with local and national elected officials, municipal staff, sustainability professionals and academics, and climate activists.

    Evaluate Program Impact using student and teacher post-program surveys, regular opportunities for informal feedback, focus groups, and/or classroom visits.

    Building a Green Texas and Sustainable Intelligence Programs

    Support Green Building Program Manager with design and facilitation of school-year and summer field experiences for Austin and Texas Gulf Coast high school student participating in the Building a Green Texas program.

    Foster and leverage local networks to connect youth with local and national elected officials, municipal staff, green building professionals and academics, and climate activists.

    Support the Program Team with Eco-Audit Grant applications, including providing support directly to students working on applications, providing feedback to students who have submitted applications, and providing post-award support for effective implementation of grant-funded projects.

    Support development of Environmental and Climate Justice resources for K-12 teachers and students.

    Skills and Qualifications

    Required

    Demonstrated commitment to sustainability, youth engagement, and climate activism.

    Minimum two years of experience working with high school students.

    Must have a personal vehicle or alternative means of transportation for local travel (not covered by EcoRise).

    Must be willing to work occasional nights and weekends.

    Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills that help represent and reach racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse communities.

    Self-motivated personality with effective project management skills; attentive to details with keen aptitude for organization.

    Strong computer literacy skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps.

    Preferred

    Lived experiences as a youth climate activist.

    Experience working with municipal staff and/or local policy initiatives.

    Experience designing and facilitating engaging virtual experiences for students and/or K-12 teachers.

    Proficiency with Canvas Learning Management System.

    Experience implementing Problem-Based Learning and/or facilitating Problem-Based Learning professional development.

    Timeline and Compensation

    Project is expected to take 8-15 hours per week, from October 2020 through June 2021, with possibility of extended contract and potential to grow into a full-time position. Hourly rate is commensurate with experience, ranging from $25 - $40 per hour.
