    Editorial intern

THE CITY is seeking candidates for a full-time paid intern for the spring of 2026 focusing on general assignment and breaking news, features and on-the-street reporting.

Applications for this position will be accepted through Dec. 31, 2025.

    The Organization

THE CITY is New York City's award-winning nonprofit, nonpartisan local news organization. Working across all five boroughs, our stellar journalists bring diverse skills and backgrounds to the task of covering New York's neighborhoods, holding the powerful to account and making sense of the greatest city in the world.

THE CITY's investigative reporting has resulted in criminal indictments, political resignations and ethics inquiries. It has inspired new laws, influenced budget choices and reversed injustices. THE CITY's explanatory journalism has helped hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers to vote, keep their apartments warm, stay safe in dangerous weather, and access public assistance.

    The Position

This is not a get-coffee-and-shuffle-paperwork internship. We are looking for student journalists at the undergraduate and graduate levels who will arrive with some reporting chops. You will hone and add skills to your repertoire by working in a top-notch local newsroom.

You will work directly with an editor on both general news and feature reporting, with a focus on getting out in the field and covering what's happening in New York City first hand.

You should walk in with ideas ready to go on your first day and an understanding of how to generate and pursue story leads in this great city. We'd like to hear your thoughts on which communities or topic areas are best suited for explanatory journalism from THE CITY.

In addition to working on your own pieces, you will also help field reader questions, and feedback, and help our staffers report their stories — always with due credit.

Duties include pitching and fielding stories, reporting and writing and taking photographs at times and helping draft parts of our morning newsletter.

We're looking for someone who can commit to a full work week for 12 weeks, and lives within the five boroughs or immediate suburbs for the duration of the internship.

The ideal candidate is a motivated, energetic student of journalism who can work well with others and is passionate about the power and importance of local news.

    Qualifications

    • Strong writing and verbal communication skills
    • A nose for news
    • A willingness to listen and learn — and to share what you know

    Other things to know ...

    Salary: $800/week
    Location: New York City (obviously)

Job descriptions like this one are wish lists that are rarely completely fulfilled, even by the successful candidate. Don't hesitate to apply even if you don't check every box. You can be right for the job even if you're missing a bullet point or two, and you can have important skills we haven't thought of that would make you a compelling candidate. Even if this doesn't end up being a match, applying puts you on our radar — and it's free!

We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people of the city we cover. We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages, and we especially encourage members of traditionally under-represented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people, immigrants, veterans, people with disabilities, and those with lived experiences in the communities we cover.
