    Job Description

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Manufacturing Operations Intern will work on projects and initiatives under the supervision of the Manufacturing Operations staff. As part of the team, the intern will develop an understanding for the Manufacturing Operations processes and develop methods, tools, and documentation to support lean manufacturing and improve the overall product flow.

    The Manufacturing Operations Intern undertakes a variety of on-going activities and assigned projects at varying levels of professional complexity requiring knowledge within an area of specialty and/or engineering college major.

    1. Participate in technical projects and programs designed to develop personal and professional skills and expertise appropriate to the needs of the Manufacturing Operations Department.

    2. Perform various duties related to the day-to-day operations of the Manufacturing Operations Department. Examples of typical assignments include:

      • Conduct studies and propose improvements to the overall process flow and spatial utilization based on Lean Manufacturing principles
      • Create and update documentation for manufacturing standard of work
      • Evaluate data collection systems, make recommendations and updates
      • Evaluate ergonomics and safety within the Manufacturing operations
      • Create Work Instructions (WI) to document Industrial Engineering processes
      • Utilize AutoCAD to develop facility layout drawings of production and support areas
      • Participate in time studies to derive standards for operational performance
    3. Utilizes engineering methods (e.g. mathematical models, simulation, statistics) to assist in developing optimal process designs and efficient utilization of resources (e.g. facilities, personnel, materials, equipment) in the creation and validation of products;

    4. Analyzes and supports the design of the value stream including capability, capacity (e.g. risk analysis, supplier performance) throughput work flow and logistics (e.g. critical path, lead-time, transportation, production floor layout).  Utilize tools such as Value Stream Maps, SIPOCs, process flow charts and other Lean Six Sigma tools. 

    5. Interact directly with colleagues and other internal or external resources in the planning of assignments and completion of projects.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Must be a current student enrolled in a relevant engineering degree program
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to understand and follow complex, detailed instructions, and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment
    • Must be able to approach technical problems in a logical and scientific manner
    • Must be flexible and able to handle multiple priorities, and be able to work for short to moderate periods of time without direct supervision
    • Computer skills, familiarity with basic shop tools and/or machine equipment, and an aptitude and understanding of basic electrical, mechanical, optical, or software engineering principles.  Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Visio is preferred.
    • Requires technical writing and documentation skills
