Position Summary
The Senior Electrical Engineer develops and implements new electrical technologies for air compressor products. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, this role provides hands-on engineering support for electrical components and systems and partners with Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Quality to design, validate, and launch new products for the global compressor market. This position requires strong problem-solving skills and comfort working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Design electrical components, assemblies, and systems for air compressor products.
• Perform design calculations and engineering analysis to validate product designs.
• Create and execute test protocols for electro-mechanical design validation and reliability.
• Ensure products meet applicable compliance standards and certification requirements (UL, ETL, CSA).
• Develop, maintain, and communicate project schedules, milestones, and status updates to internal teams and external partners.
• Partner with Manufacturing and third-party agencies (UL/CSA) to support compliance testing and approvals, including UL1450 and CSA C22.2 No. 68.
• Support product improvement and cost reduction initiatives.
• Conduct failure analysis using standard lab equipment, document findings, and provide clear written reports.
• Support new product development processes (Stage-Gate or milestone-based).
• Provide technical support to internal teams and collaborate with suppliers and vendors on product changes and improvements.
Core Technical Competencies
• Electric motors: Single-phase and three-phase induction, universal, PMDC, and brushless DC.
• Motor controls: Design systems to start/stop motors safely, reliably, and durably.
• Documentation: Create and interpret schematics and wiring diagrams for assembly and troubleshooting.
• Testing: Build rigorous validation plans that prove system reliability.
• System integration: Strong understanding of integrating electrical systems into complete products.
• Regulatory compliance: Experience working with UL/CSA and manufacturing teams to meet standards.
• Hands-on capability: Strong mechanical intuition and practical, hands-on engineering approach.
• Communication: Clear, effective collaboration with internal teams and external vendors.
Education and Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required.
• 7+ years of electrical engineering experience focused on electric motors and motor controls. Air compressors or power tools experience preferred.
• Experience with new product development in a manufacturing environment.
• Project management and organization skills using Microsoft Office tools.
• Experience with cost reduction and product improvement projects.
• Experience with battery and battery charging systems preferred.
• Ability to create and interpret schematic and wiring drawings.
• Experience with PCB layout. EMC/EMI experience is a plus.
• Knowledge of ASME pressure vessels is a plus.
• Proficient in Windows and Microsoft Office.
