    The Elgin Math and Science Academy Charter School (EMSA, www.elginmathandscience.org) opened in August of 2018 to all students residing in the U-46 attendance area. EMSA is a kindergarten to 8th grade school.

    EMSA is seeking a compelling, committed, and innovative Dean of Student Culture that will help to establish a positive learning environment that promotes Wow & Wonder in the classroom while modeling and encouraging the habits of scholarship for students' self-discipline.

    The Dean of Student Culture will report to and work closely with the Principal, along with the administrative team and teachers, to develop and promote a culture of high expectations with high levels of support to ensure success for all students. The Dean of Student Culture will serve as a support to teachers in developing an EL Education culture around EMSA's Habits of Scholarship (HOS) to create a positive and supportive environment in their classrooms and in achieving high levels of engagement and learning from all students. The Dean of Student Culture will serve as the coordinator for the EMSA Crew Program (small group advisories), developing the Crew Curriculum Map and supporting teachers and staff in the planning and delivery of Crew lessons and experiences.

    EMSA Dean of Student Culture Responsibilities

    Crew

    • Facilitating and Planning Community Crew in collaboration with Principal weekly for the entire school to build community, celebrate, recognize and showcase student endeavors.
    • Build a Crew Curriculum Map and additional resources to support teachers with Crew lessons.
    • Support staff with the implementation of EL Education's Crew Curriculum.
    • Assisting teachers and crew leaders with building crew within their classrooms and planning crew lessons.
    • Facilitate and Plan Staff Crew weekly in collaboration with the admin team.

    Discipline/Behavior

    • In charge of office referrals for significant student behaviors including assisting with the reentry of students back to class and a restorative conversation among affected parties.
    • Discipline data analysis to ensure checks for racial and gender biases and inequities and to ensure fair discipline practices for student behavior and character development.
    • Monitor GoGuardian for appropriate internet and Chromebook usage, along with updating the Acceptable Use of Technology Policy.
    • Implementing and training staff on Restorative Practices.
    • Promote and communicate clear school-wide expectations for character development and positive behavior.
    • Provide behavior counseling and support for high-needs students such as observations, parent conferences, home visits and intervention groups.
    • Team lead as MTSS Behavior
    • Functions as a member of the Crisis Team

    Classroom Management

    ● Assist teachers in the implementation of EL Education's Management in the Active Classroom

    (MAC).

    • Facilitate Walkthroughs with other admin team members and lead conversations on the implementation of non-negotiables and day in the life procedures building wide.
    • Provide staff with MAC training in various forms.
    • Partner with the admin team to support teachers in developing classroom structures to establish student relationships and maintaining consistent classroom routines in a student-centered classroom.
    • Provide supervision of students during lunch and recess as needed.

    Professional Development

    • Work with the admin team to plan and lead in planning professional development for teachers.
    • Work with the admin team to develop and implement professional development plans for new staff. Plans should be differentiated based on teacher experience and job responsibilities.
    • Work with the admin team and teachers to plan the summer training institute. Participate in planning and leading sessions as needed.
    • Participate in the development of school-wide professional development goals and plans as a member of the ILT.

    Staff Development

    • In conjunction with the admin team, evaluates all instructional staff.
    • In conjunction with the admin team, plan and implement new staff orientation on EL Education foundational practices, MAC, the structure of crew, etc.
    • Update and maintain Day in the Life Handbook.
    • Manages staff absences and sub coverage.
    • Manages school calendar for staff and family events.

    School Development

    • Monitor progress on Work Plan and ensure alignment to EL Education credentialing and other compliance measures including credentialing plans and archiving for credentialing.
    • Update and maintain the Student Handbook.
    • Create and ensure proper implementation of Standards Based Report Cards and grading practices.
    • Create the Master Building Schedule to ensure appropriate use of spaces.
    • Proactively create and develop positive relationships with all members of the school community (students, teachers, families).
    • Serve as a liaison to parents and facilitate parent education and involvement, including reinforcing the need for parents to support the school's policies and practices for student discipline, dress code, and events.
    • Serve as a member of the school leadership team.
    • Demonstrate awareness of school/community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.
    • Leads the development of middle school programming including after school activities, sports teams, 8th grade transitions and graduation, high school applications and tours, etc.

    EL Education

    • Responsible for the implementation of school and classroom practices that promote and uphold a positive school culture based on the EL Education Core Practices of culture and Character
    • Presents Professional Development of EL Education
    • Liaison between EMSA and School Designer and Curriculum Specialist.

    Qualifications

    • Master's degree (preferred) in applicable field of student/education from an accredited college or university.
    • At least 3 years classroom teaching experience (preferred); experience in a school-based leadership role preferred.
    • Demonstrated experience with experimental or project-based learning.
    • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning process.
    • Experience and training in conflict resolution strategies and/or restorative practices.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of multiple forms of assessment, including Assessments for Learning, Portfolios, Student-Led Conferences, etc.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of how to use data to drive instruction.
    • Demonstrated understanding of effective practices to coach and develop teachers.
    • Demonstrated success in effectively solving challenging problems through a positive, collaborative approach.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work with diverse populations.
