VICE PRESIDENT, LAB OPERATIONS
JOB SUMMARY
The Vice President (VP) of Laboratory Operations is responsible for oversight of all testing within the eMBRY Health's CLIA lab in a manner that is scalable while improving quality, production predictability, turn-around time, customer focus and reliability, and reducing costs. You will provide leadership and direction to the clinical laboratory operations team overseeing clinical laboratory testing, the quality system of the laboratory, as well as acting as a technical resource to laboratory testing staff. You must have a history of demonstrated success in managing in a high change environment and evolving businesses, instilling successful cultures, defining and meeting objectives, building value for clients and providing senior management with visibility and predictability.
Major responsibilities include management of the clinical laboratory and other operations of eMBRY Labs and maintaining the capacity of the labs. You must have significant experience running a high complexity CLIA certified laboratory and deep knowledge of CLIA and FDA regulations, instrumentation, and other platforms, safety, quality assurance and proper methods for documenting, conducting, and executing studies performed in a CLIA environment and developing and maintaining operational budgets.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establish laboratory organization and process plans and delegate responsibilities, authorities and accountability to appropriate staff.
- Develop and manage budgets for clinical laboratory resources and capital expenditures and other areas of responsibility.
- Lead Clinical Laboratory Operations to meet operational, quality and financial objectives.
- Collaborate with the CLIA Laboratory Director on any issue that may affect the quality, performance, scaling, etc.
- Collaborate with the executive management team on strategy, solution roadmap; go to market, positioning, and other planning activities as necessary to keep ahead of industry needs and initiatives.
- Direct, coordinate and oversee major projects to the best economic advantage of the company, as needed to support laboratory management infrastructure.
- Implement policies and procedures to accommodate increased sample volume and new test methods, improving workflow, efficiency and productivity.
- Lead other operational functions as defined herein to meet functional area objectives and exceed performance goals.
- Manage inventory of reagents and consumables in conjunction with Supply Chain/Warehouse based on laboratory forecast and capacity.
- Develop operational metrics for a timely report of performance against objective indicators to the management team. Systematize reporting.
- Ensure TAT is monitored and maintained.
- Ensure the laboratory's capacity is always maintained for business needs.
- Create and evaluate new procedures and equipment for potential use in the laboratory and recommend new procedures and equipment where necessary.
- Responsible for management development and training plans within the laboratory, as well as reviewing and appraising management performance.
- Ensure automation operations and validation teams are supporting laboratory operations.
- Retain, hire and provide career paths for employees.
- Ensure appropriate staffing is maintained for laboratory operations, automation, and validation teams.
- Assure proper SOP training for all laboratory staff.
- Interface with facilities to ensure laboratory infrastructure is built out and maintained.
- Effectively communicate and influence across all levels of the organization from staff to executive leadership.
- Ability to communicate project-related information including the planning and execution of meetings and presentations.
- Create communication channels to actively engage staff in finding solutions.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein and as directed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, or related field; or Medical Technologist Degree and certification in MT (ASCP), MC/MB (ASCP), or CLS (ASCP)
- Prior experience desired in management of laboratory business, including areas as finance, operations, client services, specimen processing, total quality management, and technical service
- 5+ years of experience effectively working in a regulated laboratory environment in the healthcare industry (FDA or CLIA)
- 3+ years of managerial or supervisory experience
- 2+ years of experience working under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations and other state regulations
- 1+ years of managerial experience in a high-volume, high-complexity, CAP and CLIA regulated clinical laboratory environment
- In-depth knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, laboratory safety and quality assurance to support ongoing and future projects are also required, as is the ability to communicate well through written and verbal means
- Strong leadership, organizational and planning skills

- Strong experience in the clinical production laboratory environment
- Ability to lead and function in a team atmosphere
