Our Emergency Management Summer Internship offers unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation. As an intern, you will work alongside seasoned emergency management professionals, assist in developing emergency plans and incident management. This role is ideal for individuals pursuing a career in emergency services, public safety, or crisis management who want to grow and apply their skills in a supportive environment serving at the local level of government

    This position is for a Summer Intern with the Steuben County Emergency Management Agency

    Duties are performed under direct supervision of the Director of Emergency Management.

    The position is Part-Time; 24 hours per week, during normal business hour of 8 AM to 4:30 PM. The position shall last no longer than 13 weeks; from May 2026 to August 2026.

    The position is a paid position of $17.00/hr.

    DUTIES:

    Participate in a variety of professional development activities, including disaster response training, exercises, and continuing education.

    Prepare and/or present written, oral, and electronic presentations to management staff. A presentation to the Steuben County Board of Commissioners will be completed at the close of the internship.

    Assist Emergency Management Director with project plan updates and development; Intern will develop Event Action Plans (EAP) as assigned for various summer events throughout the county.

    Serve in a designated support role at the county Emergency Operations Center during any disaster activations; perform as part of a Damage Assessment Team during disaster response.

    Engage in community outreach events; partner with local government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community stakeholders to promote emergency preparedness initiatives.

    Engage with local elected officials by attending relevant Commissioner and Council meetings; engage with regional Emergency Management agencies and partners.

    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    I. ** JOB REQUIREMENTS:**

    Currently enrolled in a college/university, seeking a baccalaureate degree, graduate degree, or senior level graduate studies.

    Candidate is currently working toward a degree in Emergency Management, or a related field; Homeland Security, Public Safety, Public Health, Business Continuity, Meteorology, Public Administration.

    Candidates should have a working knowledge of the National Incident Management System/Incident Command System (ICS) as it relates to Emergency Management. An ideal candidate will have completed, or be willing to complete ICS 100, 200, 700 during the term of the program.

    Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, elected officials, volunteers, other local, state and federal emergency service personnel, government personnel, and members of the public when asked to do so.

    Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

    Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to comprehend a variety of reference books and manuals and County ordinances.

    Ability to properly operate standard department equipment, including a computer, calculator, telephone, copier, and radio. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products; Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.

    Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks accurately and on time.

    Desire a willingness to be open to learning new concepts, tools, and processes throughout the internship.

    Must be able to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times, be reliable, and show respectful communication.

    Possession of a valid Indiana State Driver's license.

    DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

    Intern performs duties which are designed to aid in their professional growth in the field of emergency management. Position will be guided by the Director of Emergency Management in a broad spectrum of related tasks that include office work as well as field work.

    RESPONSIBILITY:

    Intern candidate will be responsible for the timely completion of the projects that they are assigned by the Director of Emergency Management. The Intern will help contribute to the Departmental mission by applying rules, regulations, and guidelines to numerous cases and situations that have a significant bearing on the community. Incumbent works within general parameters and guidelines, with work reviewed for soundness of judgment, attainment of objectives, and compliance with instructions and guidelines.

    PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

    Incumbent reports directly to the Director of Emergency Management.

    ** PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:**

    Intern performs duties in a standard office environment and in the field, involving exposure to inclement weather and health risks associated with various emergencies and natural disasters, such as working in wet surroundings, walking on uneven terrain, lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 25 pounds, working near odors, dust and dirt, and a noisy environment and must wear protective clothing or equipment as required. Regular duties involve, sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, keyboarding, close/far vision, depth/color perception, crouching/kneeling, speaking clearly, hearing sounds/communication, and handling/grasping/fingering objections. Intern may be asked to respond for severe weather alerts or other natural or man-made emergencies.

    Work location : Steuben County Annex Building, located in Angola, IN

    Work Hours : 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (30-minute unpaid lunch), 3 days/week (as agreed upon), Monday – Friday

    Duration: No longer than 13 weeks, from May 2026 to August 2026
