Empirical Systems Aerospace, Inc. (ESAero) is a growing aerospace company in the San Luis Obispo area that provides various services which include but are not limited to: rapid system development, on-demand niche engineering, hands-on development/testing, electric aircraft design, and small UAS aerospace system manufacturing.
JOB SUMMARY:
ESAero is seeking an experienced System Safety Engineer to join our team in San Luis Obispo, CA. This engineer will develop and support system safety assessment activities of unique all-electric and hybrid-electric aircraft configurations. Responsibilities include both qualitative and quantitative assessments of system safety per standard aerospace industry practices - including but not limited to Functional Hazard Assessment, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, and lifetime reliability analysis. Engineer will be tasked with team leadership roles and expected to delegate and coordinate safety assessment tasks with other employees, including Level I/II engineers.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field
5+ years of relevant engineering experience
Prior experience with safety analysis of aircraft systems:
Top-down safety development & validation processes
Aircraft function identification and function tree development
Identification of isolated and common-cause failure modes
Aircraft system design through functional safety analysis
Familiarity with aircraft development safety analysis processes:
FHA, PSSA, CCA, FTA, FMEA, ZSA
Familiarity with aircraft quantitative analysis:
Basic component and system reliability analysis
MTTFF, MTBF, Failure Rates
Familiarity with FAA Regulations 14 CFR Part 23/25, 27/29, 91
Familiarity with system Risk Management strategies
Willing to relocate to San Luis Obispo, CA
U.S. Citizen
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field
7+ years of relevant engineering experience
Experience with dedicated system reliability analysis tools:
ReliaSoft reliability assessment toolkit or similar
Experience with electric aircraft propulsion technology
Familiarity with SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice Guidelines and Methods:

ARP4754A
Familiarity with additional FAA Regulations 14 CFR Part 33, 35, 36, 121, 135
Familiarity with ASTM aircraft certification Means of Compliance:
ASTM F3061 /F3061M
ASTM F3230
ASTM F3264-17
Familiarity with software and hardware design assurance processes:
Experience managing small engineering teams
