    The Health and Safety Specialist reports directly to and assists the Director of People and Cultural -USA. The Health and Safety Specialist will drive initiatives in the Sterling facility through a culture of safety, health and sustainability metrics and proactive solutions. Working with key stakeholders within the organization to identify and assess conditions that could produce accidents or incidents and then collaboratively prepare and recommend corrective actions with business leaders. The Health and Safety Specialist will be the overall champion of the Sterling facility health, environmental and safety program.

    Key Responsibilities include:

    Consults and advises management and employees and safety committees on occupational hygiene and safety programs, relevant policies and legislation

    Coordination and delivery of training to hourly employees

    Coordinating safety related upgrades/changes with the Manufacturing Engineering group

    Organizing Wellness programs such as annual Flu Clinics, lunch & learns, smoking cessation programs, etc.

    Identification and analysis of trends and development of action plans to reduce frequency and severity

    Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses, and recommend corrective actions.

    Implements and maintains all Health & Safety / Environmental policies and procedures as per the OSHA and other Federal/State regulations or internal requirements.

    Manage and develop Job functional analysis descriptions and perform Ergonomic analysis in conjunction with Manufacturing Engineer team.

    Coordinate, conduct safety audits and create action plans to address audit findings.

    Coordinate all Environmental tracking and partner with all agencies to complete the required reporting.

    Claims Management

    Management of Workers Compensation claims and management of cases.

    Management of Return to Work programs and offers of modified work.

    Educating supervisors on safe return options for modified work.

    Safety Committee

    Act as Management Certified Member, Co-Chair, and take minutes

    Work with members to build a strong committee and create an overall culture of working safely with every employee

    Schedule training/retraining for committee members

    Participate in Safety Committees outside the Company.

    Legal Requirements

    Ensuring facility meets the legal requirements under the Occupational Health & Safety

    Act, Reg.851, Fire Code, Building Code, CSA Standards, etc.

    Working with and supporting production supervisors to ensure compliance

    Accompanying government inspectors (OSHA, Fire,etc) during unplanned audits and addressing orders/issues raised by them, if any

    On call for emergencies and plays a key role in an emergency (serious injury or death and in a disaster such as a fire, tornado or other natural disaster)

    Work with maintenance (and other employees that hire contractors) to ensure any contractors working on property work safely and in accordance to their respective legal obligations.

    Reporting Statistical record keeping and reporting

    Implements and maintains all Health & Safety / Environmental policies and procedures as per the OSHA and other Federal/State regulations or internal requirements.

    Initiating safety talk sessions for monthly team meetings

    Attending weekly supervisor meetings to discuss safety topics and campaigns.

    Creation and promotion of safety campaigns on relevant topics.

    Includes ensuring PDA’s are up to date

    Coordination and completion of ergonomic assessments as required.

    Ensure all Environmental testing (air quality, noise levels) is performed as required and the results are presented as required by law.

    Develop a Sustainability Plan in conjunction with Manufacturing Engineers and Maintenance and support the Ecovardis reporting.

    Collaborate with the other specialists in other locations on how to address safety issues and share best practices.

    Gather Health & Safety statistics from each location to combine into corporate report for senior management and board of directors.

    Do you qualify? We are seeking:

    Bachelor’s Degree in an occupational or environmental health science degree or field.

    Master’s Degree or CSP designation preferred.

    3+ years of experience working in Health & Safety.

    1-2 years’ experience with sustainability and environmental protocols.

    Previous experience in a manufacturing facility

    Strong communication and leadership skills

    Ability to facilitate and lead group of employees

    Strong analytical abilities

    Strong problem-solving abilities

    Demonstrated initiative in proactively identifying future potential safety risks and suggesting or implementing appropriate solutions

    Ability to motivate and inspire others in working towards a common goal

    Ability to work independently as well as collaborate with multiple areas of the organization.
