    Summary/Objective

We seek to hire a person interested in environmental monitoring instrumentation for a 6-8 month internship position in the Agroecology Program at Archbold Biological Station, located in south-central Florida.

The Agroecology research program is based at Buck Island Ranch, Archbold’s 10,500-acre working cattle ranch. This program utilizes the ranch as a platform for research on environmental and economic sustainability and focuses on the role of grazing lands in the Headwaters of the Everglades. In addition, the program partners with state government agencies and local ranchers on water management projects throughout the headwaters region. Routine long-term monitoring of a wide range of environmental parameters such as hydrology, water quality, weather, soil moisture and phenology accompanies our research and management work. Buck Island Ranch, along with its partner at the University of Florida Range Cattle Research Center, is one of 18 sites in the USDA's nationwide Long-term Agroecosystem Research network (LTAR). Our group consists of 3-4 full time scientists together with research staff, interns, graduate students, cattle operations staff and collaborators, and is a stimulating and enjoyable workplace.

This internship offers an in-depth experience on a wide variety of environmental monitoring instrumentation systems along the plant-soil-water-atmosphere continuum. The exposure will impart familiarity with the components of monitoring stations - sensors, datalogger programming, data communication systems and solar power, as well as troubleshooting approaches and data QA. The experience and abilities gained have enabled past interns to obtain monitoring-related positions in government agencies, research institutions and environmental consulting firms. Interns who proceeded to graduate school in ecology, hydrology and environmental sciences also mentioned the experience came in handy in designing their field studies and data collection.

Archbold Internships are unpaid appointments without an entitlement to a paid job at the conclusion of the internship. Interns are not entitled to either minimum wage or overtime pay under the Department of Labor FLSA Rule. You may scan the QR code below or reach out to our Human Resource Department at hr@archbold-station.org for a copy of the Archbold Internship Policy. Interns gain experience by assisting ongoing monitoring programs and by conducting independent projects that can involve system design/experimentation, data analysis with oral and written presentations of the results. Interns are required to perform tasks in various conditions, including inclement weather, heat, and humidity. Hands on training and working hours, are as advertised.

As an unpaid Post-Baccalaureate Intern, Archbold will provide you with the following allowances:

Bi-weekly stipend for expenses (subject to self-employment tax)

Time off - 2 hrs per bi-weekly period (see policy for details)
