    ABOUT

    Equis is a set of organizations (including Equis Research, Equis Institute, and EquisLabs) working to create a better understanding of Latinos, innovate new approaches to reach and engage them, and invest in the leadership and infrastructure for long-term change and increased engagement.

    Since 2019, we have served as a hub for Latino research and innovation, leaning into the complexities of Latino voters in the United States, ensuring they get the sophistication of treatment and level of attention that matches their critical role in the electorate. Equis is also committed to developing Latino leaders across the progressive space, serving as a convener of organizations and individuals leading Hispanic-focused programs. The scope of our work is designed to engage Latinos in multiple arenas because we believe that this moment requires a complete rethinking of how we engage Latinos.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    Equis is seeking a Communications Strategist to support all levels of planning and execution of a robust communications strategy. Reporting to the Director of Communications, this position will ensure the implementation of the communication strategy, support and maintain reporter relationships and monitor internal and external sources to measure impact.     DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Execution of Strategic Communications Plan: Support the execution of a comprehensive communication strategy that aligns with the organization and departments' goals and objectives.

    • Material Creation and Development: * Lead the development of compelling materials, including talking points, press releases, op-eds, blog posts, pitches and briefings. * May serve as the primary writer and/or editor in the material development process. * May help manage external consultants or freelancers in the development of communications materials. * Ensures that all materials effectively communicate our mission, values, and key messages, and convey a clear, unified image.

    • Media Relations: * Support and maintain relationships with key media contacts to secure coverage of our research, initiatives, and projects. * Proactively pitch stories and respond to media inquiries in a timely and effective manner.

    • Issue Monitoring and Analysis: * Stay informed about current events, legislative developments, and emerging trends related to Latino electorate and community, and political advocacy. * Monitor media coverage and public discourse to identify opportunities and challenges, and provide timely analysis and recommendations to leadership.

    • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including talkers, ally organizations and partners, to advance our department goals and amplify our impact.

    • Evaluation and Reporting:

      • Establish metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of our communication efforts.
      • Track and analyze data, clips, projects and assets to assess impact, identify areas for improvement, and report progress to internal stakeholders.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • 3-5 years of demonstrated and relevant experience in communications, with specific knowledge of and demonstrated results related to strategic communications and media relations.
    • Keen awareness of the news cycle and how Equis' worldview might fit into it.
    • Excellent communicator and writer with presentation, proofreading and editing skills, including the ability to make complex issues understandable and relevant to external audiences.
    • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse groups and people, including across departments and teams internally and externally at all levels.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently, drive progress, share vision, adapt and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
    • Experience managing external consultants and freelancers.
    • History and understanding of political nuances and deep familiarity with the societal, cultural, and political landscape of the Hispanic and Latino community.
    • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, along with the ability to manage high-pressure situations.
    • Flexible and resilient, willing to innovate and try new approaches to problem-solve.
    • Comprehensive ability to communicate in Spanish both verbally and in writing.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 4+ years of advanced experience in communications, in political, electoral, advocacy, and campaign environments.
    • Rapid response and some digital or social media experience.
    • Existing relationships with reporters and media figures.
    • Fluency in Spanish, reading, verbal and written.
    • Familiarity with Google Slides, Keynote, Canva or similar presentation software tools.
    • Experience utilizing Mailchimp, Google Suites software, and ClickUp or other similar project management tools.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
    • The ability to communicate with colleagues, partners, and clients via phone, video call, and email

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Equis is a national remote office environment with team members located across all continental U.S. time zones. Candidates should be prepared to either work from home or a location of their choosing that is located within the continental United States. Equis has implemented a pro vaccination policy, subject to exemptions. Candidates must be willing to follow the established policy to prevent and limit the exposure of COVID-19.

    This position requires the ability to work core hours Monday through Friday in your local time. This position will require occasional nights and weekend work and some in-person attendance for all-staff or department level events, approximately 2 per year, which require overnight travel.

    COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

    This is a fully remote (USA only), full-time position, Exempt with occasional domestic travel and a competitive salary range of $78,000-$97,000K per year. This salary range represents a good faith estimate of what Equis may pay for this position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as budget availability and commensurate with the selected candidates' experience. As the role progresses, there is potential for salary growth and professional development opportunities commensurate with the evolution of the role. This position is currently funded through 2025.
