  • Responsibilities

    LITERACY SPECIALIST 

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Disaggregate and analyze student literacy data to inform instruction, “just in time” interventions, and teacher practice. 
    • Oversee literacy intervention including phonic intervention, oral reading fluency, and blended learning softwares (Lexia Core, ThinkCerca, Reading Plus). 
    • Work with the phonics team to target students with large reading gaps and make 1.5+ years of growth in one year. 
    • Provide direct instruction to students identified as eligible for reading services in individual, small group, and/or full classroom settings with an emphasis on emergent, beginning, and transitional readers.
    • Provide curriculum support and training for all teachers and continuous staff development 
    • Model and coaches instructional methods in a variety of settings (whole group and small group)
    • Collaborate with and coaches teachers on the use of assessment data to plan instruction; analyzes school literacy data and plans for future literacy need
    • Facilitate vertical and horizontal collaborative instructional planning
    • Assess students using a variety of measures to determine appropriate placement and specific instructional needs
    • Conduct classroom walkthroughs and provides feedback to teachers and leaders
    • Assist with the planning and delivery of parent workshops and informational sessions involving the language arts program
    • Participate in parent conferences and provides instructional suggestions
    • Oversee the independent reading program including awards, processing book requests, processing new books, and checking in with students on books (with the help of a teaching fellow) 
    • Supporting teachers, students, and staff in making productive use of the library as part of their curriculum. 
    • Ensuring the library Teaching Fellow is prepared to support teachers and students with library needs and add to the Etoile literacy program.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • A minimum of two years of professional experience in high-performing urban schools with specific experience in marketing and/or student recruiting. 
    • Expertise in teaching reading, teaching ELA, and coaching teachers. 
    • Experience as a teacher or school-based role preferred. 
    • A demonstrable commitment to pursuing equity.
    • A strong track record of experience and results as a trusted member of an organization's leadership team.
    • Ability to multi-task and work within an ambiguous, fast-moving, start-up environment, while driving toward clarity and solutions.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Bilingual (Spanish and English) required.
