What’s the role?
We are looking for an Engineering Manager, International Search, to join our Search team at Etsy, lead our International Search team and grow our outstanding machine learning (ML) engineers. We develop efficient, state-of-the-art, large-scale search models that sift through a universe of over a hundred million special, extraordinary items to help Etsy buyers find something they will love.
Our team, International Search, is responsible for showing buyers relevant inventory based on their location and languages. As the engineering manager, you will lead the team of engineers with expertises spanning across machine learning, neutral language progressing, and backend web development. We closely follow the latest research and implement its best ideas efficiently, at scale for the benefit of Etsy's buyers. Working hands-on with a cross-functional team, we deliver robust production models that will be A/B tested live on Etsy.com! This is a full-time position in Search Relevance initiative and the base salary range will be $197,000 - 257,000 USD per year. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Brooklyn Office once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. What’s this team like at Etsy?
International Search is a ML team under Search Relevance initiative that strives to improve the relevancy of search results for Etsy buyers on international markets. We apply the latest techniques from machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), optimization and information retrieval research at Etsy’s scale. Here is a taste of some of the problems we are solving:
Understand international buyer behavior to better personalize search results locally.
Use concepts like neural ranking, graph neural networks, retrieval models to improve search relevance globally while also considering cross-border trades.
Work closely with fellow ML engineers, full-stack engineers, applied scientists, and product managers, to develop & test large scale experiments
Optimize ML models to meet latency SLAs at the scale of Etsy production traffic and launch live A/B experiments to test our hypotheses.
What does the day-to-day look like?
Work in a cross-functional team to prioritize projects to achieve our product targets, grow and improve our international markets.
Manage a team of ML engineers and technical leaders to design, build, test and maintain scalable machine learning models by applying the latest concepts in research and industry.
Provide valuable input into the strategic direction of ML assisted product engineering.
Learn and share management practices with your peers and engineering leadership to continually grow in your career.
Build a strong peer network with other managers at Etsy to increase your organizational context and support the professional growth and projects of your team.

Qualifications
Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
Have experience managing a ML team that developed impactful solutions of machine learning & NLP problems at scale to production applications, i.e, search, ads, recommendation, ecommerce.
Have experience managing international retrieval and ranking teams
Have experience leading technical teams, setting goals, and crafting plans to achieve them.
Facilitate great technical decision-making across a broad technical stack, having passion for the technical aspects of your work, but a desire to let engineers drive the details.
BS/MS or PhD in computer science, applied math, engineering or a related field.
Support and coach your engineers through the challenges of developing fantastic ML and software at scale with many-times-daily pushes to production.
Believe that people come to work to do great things and you derive satisfaction from helping others reach beyond what they were previously capable of.
Your enthusiasm and passion for learning and improving are contagious which shows through your experience empowering others to grow!
