    This is a full-time role located in San Francisco, CA or Brooklyn, NY. Our offices are currently closed due to COVID-19, and thus you will start/work remotely until it’s safe to return.

     

    Etsy is looking for a technical leader who can spearhead its applied science effort to build its next-generation shopping experience based on Computer Vision technology. This team will be a part of the Applied Science Group within Etsy’s central Data organization. Our mission is to build customized machine learning applications to optimize business and product values for the Etsy marketplace.     In this role, you will drive the vision and roadmap for applying Computer Vision technology to improve the browsing and shopping experience for over 60 million Etsy users. You will work with product leaders across the company to devise vision-based experiences that help buyers seamlessly navigate Etsy’s one-of-a-kind inventory of 50+ million items. You will manage and grow a team of applied scientists and machine learning engineers. Your team consists of experts in the computer vision field and is responsible for translating state-of-the-art research into deployable e-commerce products. 

     

    As a senior applied science leader/manager, we expect you to have solid machine learning and engineering skills in order to drive the technical vision and stay connected to the details. We also expect you to have relevant leadership and communication experience needed to excel in a fast-paced, cross-functional, and impact-driven environment.

    EXAMPLE PROJECTS YOU WILL LEAD:

    • Understanding visual styles, aesthetic, quality, material, and more

    • Creating image-based search and recommendations experiences

    • Tagging images with relevant categories and attributes

    • Understanding and improving the quality of seller’s listing images

    • Identifying listings that violate copyright infringement laws

    WHAT YOU WILL DO:

    • Communicate to executives and drive the strategy of innovation.

    • Lead technical discussions, be a subject matter expert and have strategic influence.

    • Define the roadmap and supervise its execution. You will also coordinate business initiatives and their priorities.

    • Cultivate a strong applied science culture, responsible for delivering business results with the right quality and in a timely fashion.

    WHO YOU ARE:

    • You are an experienced leader who brings both technical acuity and leadership skills to build a high-performing applied science team. 

    • You work effectively with leaders in product, science, experimentation and engineering.

    • You keep learning and always seek to improve yourself. You are curious about new opportunities and act to explore them. 

    • You are familiar with trending and state-of-the-art technology in computer vision and/or machine learning.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • 2+ years of experience in leading applied science or machine learning engineering teams, especially in the area of deep learning (computer vision a plus)

    • 2+ publications in the last 5 years at top-tier conferences, such as CVPR, ICCV, KDD, NeurIPS, or SIGIR.

    • Experience in recruiting and managing technical teams, including coaching, performance people management.

    • Experience in building computer vision products for e-commerce is a strong plus.

    • M.S./Ph.D. in Computer Science or related engineering/quantitative fields
