The Engineering Manager will lead a team that owns, builds, supports, and maintains tools and infrastructure that directly impact the productivity of our Etsy employees. To be successful in this role, you will serve as a coach, mentor and technical advisor to your team members. You will partner with other managers and the director to set the future technical direction of Etsy’s internal tooling and infrastructure. You will collaborate with our internal business customers and partner teams to craft plans to achieve our business goals and will lead work on challenging engineering problems!

This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Engineering (IT Business Systems) and the base salary range will be 132,000.00 - 172,000.00 USD per year. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Brooklyn office in an in-person or flex capacity. Candidates living within commutable distance of the Brooklyn Hub, may be the first to be considered. What does the day-to-day look like?

• You will work closely and build cross-functional internal customer and partner team relationships across the business to understand, plan, and communicate strategy and direction so that the team priorities and work align with company objectives.
• You will create and manage short term strategy, roadmaps, and budget from a functional, architecture and technology perspective.
• You will cultivate a strong engineering and delivery culture within your team, responsible for delivering business results with the right quality and in a timely fashion.
• You will provide technical guidance to the team as they work to establish their own engineering practices, build automations that directly mitigate repeatable challenges, and advocate to increase process efficiency related to those systems across Etsy worldwide.
• You will hold your own in technical discussions, be a domain expert, and have strategic influence.
• You will lead your team to find opportunities for reducing toil and avoiding technical debt to reduce operations load on the team.
• You will help strengthen the team with collaboration, processes and workflows.
• You will build, maintain, refine, monitor, measure and evaluate success of key indicators and regularly report on those.
• You will drive the hiring strategy for your team, recruiting and onboarding diverse top talent to the group and working on retention.

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• 3+ years demonstrated ability leading teams, and directly managing engineers - including providing leadership, mentorship, feedback, and investing in their career growth.
• You are able to successfully lead multiple, significant tracks of work concurrently and the scope of your influence has gone beyond your team.
• You have used deep domain expertise to guide your team, which has performed at a high level as a direct result of your influence.
• You have established a track record as a trusted decision-maker over the area of the business covered by your team in the eyes of key internal customers.
• You have a strong technical background building high availability systems that operate at scale.
• You have the skills to build inclusive teams from the ground up.
• Your experience working with multiple internal customers/teams as well as external partners enables you to clearly articulate risks and dependencies on projects.
• You have previous partnerships with groups outside engineering and translating high-level business requirements into technical architecture.
• You keep learning and always seek to improve yourself and your team. You are curious about new opportunities and act to explore them.
• You lead with empathy through empowering engineers on your team and asking questions, not dictating solutions.
• You are an excellent communicator who interfaces well with technical and non-technical partners across the organization.
• You understand that being an effective engineer is as much about communicating with people and understanding the problem to be solved as it is about writing code.
• You believe in documentation and knowledge-sharing with others.
• You are passionate about your customer's experience.
• You are resilient to change and uncertainty.
