    Our client is a privately held chemical science and manufacturer based in Austin, TX. They are a Texas-based global specialty chemical company. We are partnering with them to fill a key R&D Chemist role for the company.

    The role is titled R&D Chemist, Organic Synthesis and Process Development. The role will conduct experiments to develop information relating to new products, processes, and/or properties of the company's products.

     

    As a Senior R&D Chemist, Organic Synthesis & Process Development, you will:

    • Comply with all safety, health, and environmental requirements, be the safety champion of the synthesis group.
    • Synthesize organic compounds (primarily quaternary ammonium salts and their derivatives), execute process development and optimization experiments, perform analysis and characterization of organic compounds using conventional analytical techniques/instruments, and communicate data and results to key stakeholders.
    • Design and execute lab-scale and pilot scale experiments for new product process research and development.
    • Lead Cross-function team in technology evaluation and new product and/or new process transfer from technology to production. Actively engage with plant operations and engineering to scale-up and integrate synthetic processes designed in the laboratory.
    • Support base business by leading continuous process improvement projects and executing laboratory-scale synthetic operations to support full-scale processes improvement activities.
    • Collaborate with procurement, quality assurance, and other technologists to evaluate and qualify new raw materials and suppliers in the interest of quality, cost, and business continuity.
    • Be a strong project leader and communicator by interacting with key stakeholders to align project goals, scope, timeline, budget, and deliverables; maintain a cadence of reporting progress.
    • Consistently engage across the organization to develop, establish, and maintain partnerships with multiple stakeholders.
    • Supervise /coach junior chemists, participate in professional development activities, and be a strong advocate for team cohesion.

    KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Master’s or PHD Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
    • Senior Chemist with >5-10 years (10 years for MS, 5 years for a PHD) of combined research and industry experience in Chemical Synthesis and Process Research and Development.
    • Expertise in organic chemistry including state-of-the-art and industry-standard synthetic and supporting analytical techniques.
    • Expertise in organic synthesis route design, process development, scale-up, and technology transfer to ensure optimal product quality and process efficiency.
    • Experience with design and implementation of practical, robust, scalable, and cost-effective processes in compliance with regulations.
    • Project management - consistently engages with stakeholders to effectively manage and coordinate resources, budget, timelines. Experience with stage-gate processes is a plus.
    • Inquisitive and intellectually curious, fast learner, critical thinker, creative and pragmatic problem solver.
    • competency in analytical instrumentation that may include HPLC (-UV, -MS, -CAD, -ELSD, etc.), GC (-MS, -FID, -EC etc.), NMR, FTIR, UV-vis, etc.
    • Proficiency in software applications such as: Microsoft Office product suite, Scifinder®, and patent search software etc.
    • Familiar with the principles of green chemistry.
    • Familiar with industrial-scale reactors and associated equipment trains.
    • Able to switch quickly from one project to another and be able to multitask safely and effectively.
    • Well organized and good at documenting work.
    • Strong organizational, influencing, and interpersonal skills to solve problems, drive change and relate with various stakeholders, and collaborate internally.
    • Strong listening, verbal, written and presentation skills.
    • Able to use analytics in complex decision-making.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
