Summary:
The responsibility of the Extinguisher Technician is to inspect, service, repair, and install portable fire extinguishers and related safety equipment. This role involves traveling to client locations to perform routine maintenance, ensure code compliance, and provide exceptional customer service. **
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:**
• Inspect, maintain, and repair portable fire extinguishers and wet/dry chemical fire suppression systems
• Perform inspections and servicing of kitchen hood suppression systems, ensuring compliance with NFPA standards and local codes
• Conduct hydrostatic testing, cylinder filling, recharging, halon recycling, and other shop-based services
• Identify and document deficiencies in fire extinguishers and kitchen hood systems, recommending or performing repairs or replacements as needed
• Complete and submit accurate inspection reports, certifications, and service records in a timely manner
• Educate customers on proper fire safety practices and the importance of regular system maintenance
• Sell additional fire safety services and products when applicable
• Provide emergency on-call service per schedule and respond to after-hours service requests
• Perform light building maintenance as needed (e.g., snow removal, general upkeep)
• Read and interpret blueprints to ensure proper installation and service
• Maintain company vehicle cleanliness and service readiness; return unused materials to inventory
• Obtain and maintain required certifications, including applicable state licenses, NAFED, and ICC certifications
• Communicate professionally with customers, clearly explaining services performed and addressing any questions or concerns
• Collaborate with team members and other departments to support company goals
• Perform other duties as assigned
Experience and Skills:
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Mechanical aptitude and comfort with tools and equipment
• Valid driver's license for minimum of 3 years, with clean driving record
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Willingness to be on-call for emergency service rotation
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
• Prior experience or certification in fire extinguisher systems preferred (training available for qualified candidates) **
Physical Demands:**
• Regular attendance and punctuality are essential
• Ability to stand for extended periods and perform frequent bending, lifting, climbing, and reaching
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs frequently and occasionally up to 100 lbs
• Ability to work in various environments, including outdoors, confined spaces, and at heights
• Frequent use of hands for tools, equipment, and computer work; hand-eye coordination required
• Visual requirements include the ability to distinguish colors, depth perception, and focus adjustment
• Must meet company standards for drug and alcohol testing **
Work Environment:**
• Normally works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, and in high, precarious places.
• Exposure to wet and humid conditions, airborne particles and confined spaces .
