Journeyman Cable Splicers for Copper Retirement Project
Job Description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Extracta Group, LLC is beginning the first phase of a multi-year project starting in the Portland metro Oregon area to retire and remove copper plant and migrate existing circuits to fiber. We provide a turnkey engineering, prepping, de-commissioning, extraction, processing and shipping program under contract with a major Northwest Service Provider.
Extracta is seeking experienced, qualified splicers and technicians with telecommunication experience working in outside plant to join our team as independent contractors. Splicing technicians with experience and expertise in copper plan and circuit relocation from copper-to-fiber are needed. Qualified candidates will be skilled in working with splice cases, cross connect cabinets, central office main frames and associated facilities. The majority of work will be performed in underground ducts via manholes.
The work will entail testing jumpers at verticals and cross connects, tone testing cables, performing splices on copper plant, prepping cables for extraction through a series of test procedures and tagging, and finally making box cuts or cable cuts once cables are cleared and air pressure removed. Extracta has a detailed prepping process which must be adhered to in order to prevent accidents or damage.
Safety is paramount to the project and the client. Safety equipment, test meters, PPE are mandatory on all work sites, and network, people and public safety is of the highest priority. Extracta provides comprehensive training on the processes and safety measures in accordance with our company standard and methodology.
DUTIES
Right of Way encroachment work is limited to the hours the cities allow. Generally, work will be all day, with night or weekend work not permitted by the permitting agencies. The duties include;
· Pre-auditing/surveying cables targeted for removal
· Accessing CO’s to test at main frame, cable vault, etc.
· Testing and performing box cuts at cross connects (B-Boxes) or an end-customer termination point
· Moving circuits from copper to fiber via connection to loop/CO electronics line cards
· Perform splicing in splice cases (opening/re-sealing)
· Tone test cables
· Distance testing cable
· Testing air and pumping water from manholes for access
· Working in manholes, possibly future aerial work via bucket trucks
· Set up MUTCD complaint traffic control for work areas
· Performing box cuts and cable cuts on cleared cables
· Tagging cables being removed with identification information
· Entering cable information on site into tracking database using tablets
· Preparing location & cable information to be used for extraction crews
SALARY
Work will be performed as an independent contract (1099). Extracta offers $55/hour with overtime a needed. Splicer provide their own trucks, tools, test sets, PPE and pumps, which is included as part of the compensation rate as non-taxable . Extracta provides two-way radios and certain other pieces of equipment it deems necessary. Candidates can request a complete list of tools and equipment they need to provide.
Additionally, Extracta will offer a weekly bonus for achieving production targets, and will offer a housing allowance for people needing to relocate for the project. Extracta may provide a one-time relocation allowance.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
Extracta prefers candidates applying for this position to have:
· Previously worked for a service provider in a splicing or outside plant technician capacity
· Or, previously worked for a minimum of 5 years for other contractors performing the same or similar splicing duties
· Experience working in underground ducts (manholes) as well as aerial plant
· Understanding of F1, F2 and distribution plant in the telephone network
· 5 years minimum experience working specifically on copper plant
Candidates must hold a valid drivers license, be insured, and have a clean driving record. As required by the service provider, candidates will agree to submit their personal information for a background check.
LOCATION & DURATION OF PROJECT
The first phase of the project is in the metro Portland area and will last 2+ years. Additional projects are planned in Washington and Idaho, estimating to last 4 years in total. This is a long-term opportunity, and Extracta is seeking personnel dedicated and willing to make a commitment to the project. Opportunities exist for future projects in other locations in the future
