    Job Description

    As part of a Research and Modeling team, you will get exposue to a wide variety of modeling: earthquake shaking, liquefaction, landslide, fire-following, sprinkler, tsunami, wildfire, blast and etc., with a specialized focus on a variety of data acquisition, running simulations, data post-processing and mining. The candidate will work closely with a team of different expertise to perform independent model validation, deterministic and probabilistic risk assessment, and present and explain results to technical and non-technical audiences including VERISK clients and government officials.

    A successful candidate should have a strong data analysis skill, has passion and desire to learn, and is expected to be a highly motivated, detail oriented, well organized, and excellent team player. As a researcher at VERISK, the nature of our work varies from month to month and year to year, and you will have constant opportunities to learn and grow expertise in new areas.

    Responsibilities (main responsibilities, but not limited to):

    • Data acquisition through internet search and literature review, and summarize and organize them in a way for model development and validation
    • Perform analytical studies on a variety of data including damage observations, synthesized data, insurance claims for model develop, internal sensitivity study and model evaluation
    • Represent VERISK to explain view of risks to technical and non-technical audiences
    • Author technical writing for internal and external publications

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    Qualifications (desired knowledge, skills and abilities):

    • Master with 2+ years of relevant experience in data science, and knowledge in engineering fields is a plus
    • Demonstrated capabilities in probabilistic and stochastic risk modeling
    • Familiarity with C++ and data mining skills using tools such as R, Matlab and others
    • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written mediums with technical and non-technical audiences
    • Good command of machine learning (regression, classification, clustering, time-series analysis, decision trees, neural networks, etc). Familiarity with deep-learning techniques for spatial-temporal data (LSTM, TCN, CNN, Transformers, PINN, GAN, etc) is a plus
    • Experience with common data science toolkits such as scikit-learn, PyTorch or TensorFlow
    • Comfortable deploying machine learning models in a HPC environment
    • Experience with GIS applications (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.)
    • Knowledge on catastrophe insurance regulations, state legislation and AWS is a plus
