    Job Description:

    The position is responsible for managing the sustainability, chemical management, plastics, and environmental advocacy efforts and sharing responsibilities for supporting the organization's product panel groups and understanding their interests in the active and proposed legislation. The position is also responsible for policy strategy, scheduling and facilitating meetings with legislators on behalf of assigned product panel groups, and responding to regulatory inquiries and requests to testify at public hearings. The position collaborates with appropriate in-house organization colleagues and reports to the Vice President, Federal Affairs.

     

    Major Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Primary liaison to Democratic members of Congress and Democratic congressional leadership
    • Acquires a working knowledge of the organization and the Federal Affairs Department's issues and activities
    • Prepares and implements advocacy strategies for the organization's sustainability, chemical management, plastics, climate and/or environment policies and positions.
    • Assists in the preparation and implementation of advocacy strategies for product panel group policies and positions.
    • Responds to the organization member and public inquiries and provides substantive answers and materials, as needed.
    • Lobbies members of Congress and staff, which includes building strategic and long-term relationships.
    • Engages the Administration and federal agencies, as needed.
    • Advocates policies favorable to assigned product panel groups and the organization generally to members of the legislature and other holders of public office, for purposes of persuading them to support or oppose the legislation, as appropriate.
    • Studies proposed legislation to determine possible effects on the interest of sustainability, chemical management, plastics and/or environmental advocacy, and assigned product panel groups.
    • Attends and represents the organization at state and national meetings, hearings, and conferences.
    • Plans and coordinates meetings between the organization members and elected officials to discuss legislative issues and proposals and allow officials to respond to membership concerns
    • Prepares issue summaries for internal and external clients, as needed.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Required:

    • Bachelor's Degree in political science, communications, or related field
    • Minimum of 5 years' advocacy or relevant experience
    • Strong written and oral communication skills
    • Ability to aggressively build and maintain solid relationships and advocate on behalf of applicable customer
    • Ability to provide strategic counseling, develop plans, and execute supporting tactics.
    • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects with competing priorities and exercise sound judgment in evaluating such situations and issues
    • Ability to demonstrate creativity and take the initiative
    • Proven ability to work in a team environment

     

    Preferred:

    • Congressional staff experience.
    • Environmental/sustainability regulatory or legislative experience.
