Software Engineer/Developer III
Position Description
UW-Madison’s Web Platforms/Services group is looking for a short term contractor, 6-12
months, to backfill the development of ongoing WordPress projects. This position will work
across our service portfolio to provide support for existing websites using our campus-wide Web
Hosting and central CMS services. This includes helping internal service teams and external
campus partners with WordPress, Google Analytics (Universal and/or G4), and proficiency with
LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) platforms and web hosting management tools and
protocols. (Plesk, GIT, SFTP, etc.)
Job Summary
Designs, develops, tests, debugs, and troubleshoots software and applications. Conducts
system analysis and design, and provides technical leadership, training, and guidance to lower
level staff to support information technology business operations.
Job Responsibilities
● Reviews application design specifications, codes new applications, and makes
enhancements to existing applications
● Designs and implements test plans, and prepares systems test data
● Prepares program documentation and training requirements
● Develops, prepares, or modifies technical specifications for complex projects, system
integrations, and upgrades
● Conducts systems analysis, reviews and interprets system requirements, and develops
detailed system design specifications for system integration and upgrades
● Reviews application modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with
application architecture standards
● Conducts analysis for the evaluation and selection of vendor software solutions and
packages
● Leads sub-functional team for application development or enhancement
● Contributes to the development of data structure and systems performance strategies
● Trains and provides technical guidance to lower level staff
Unique Responsibilities
● Manage WordPress sites for both internal and external teams including regular
maintenance, upgrades and feature enhancements.
● Engage with hosting platforms as it pertains to WordPress website development and
hosting.
Required Qualifications - (5 max)
demonstrated experience developing child themes and plugins
Knowledge of best practices and use of vendor plugins for WordPress
Demonstrated experience with MySQL as it is connected to WordPress websites
Experience working with Web Hosting Control Panels (Plesk/cPanel), GIT (version
control systems), Secure FTP, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with WordPress multi-sites or willingness to learn
General experience working with Google Analytics (Universal and/or G4) and Google
Tag Manager to make data driven decisions
Understanding or knowledge of AWS
Ability to work independently and part of a team
Experience with gathering and evaluating user and/or customer needs
