    Child Protective Services Case Manager

    Virginia Beach, VA | Full-Time

    About the Role

    The Virginia Beach Department of Human Services (VBDHS) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Social Work Professional to join our Child Protective Services team.

    In this role, you will work under the supervision of a Human Services Supervisor to provide case management services to children and families involved in CPS investigations or family assessments. This position plays a critical role in ensuring child safety, strengthening families, and supporting long-term stability.

    What You’ll Do

    As a CPS Case Manager, you will:

    • Provide case management services to families facing complex challenges
    • Assess child safety and make well-informed decisions to protect children
    • Conduct in-home visits and engage families in community settings (homes, schools, hospitals)
    • Facilitate family partnership and team meetings to build trust and collaboration
    • Develop and implement strengths-based service plans with families
    • Refer families to community resources, including Family Assessment & Planning Teams (FAPT)
    • Conduct initial and ongoing assessments of foster homes
    • Respond to child abuse/neglect allegations, including after-hours on-call rotation
    • Provide crisis intervention and support during emergencies
    • Maintain accurate documentation in digital case management systems
    • Collaborate with supervisors, attorneys, and multidisciplinary teams
    • Prepare court reports, attend hearings, and testify in court as needed
    • Ensure monthly face-to-face contact with all family members
    • Assist with aftercare planning and permanency outcomes
    • Intervene in high-risk situations, including removal of children when necessary

    What We’re Looking For

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in a human services-related field (e.g., Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, Family & Child Development), OR
    • Bachelor’s degree in any field plus at least 2 years of relevant human services experience

    Additional Requirements:

    • Valid driver’s license
    • Ability to work after-hours on-call rotations
    • Strong assessment, communication, and decision-making skills
    • Ability to manage sensitive situations with professionalism and empathy
