    Job Responsibilities

    Massage soft body tissues to relieve discomfort and provide treatment for injuries, wellness maintenance or medical conditions.

    Apply pressure to specific parts of the body with the hands and fingers to release muscle tension and bring relief from related symptoms.

    Discuss client concerns, medical histories and specific stresses or pains to develop the most effective approach to massage treatment.

    Meet with clients, in office, to provide treatments.

    Develop personalized treatment plans for individual clients that specify massage types, treatment areas and treatment frequency.

    Propose final treatment plans to clients and implement them only after client acceptance and agreement.

    Refer clients to other professionals and therapists when appropriate and necessary to treat additional symptoms.

    Prepare oil blends for clients’ skin and perform other treatment techniques and therapies in addition to massage.

    Education and Experience

    The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of an Associate’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree along with successful completion of an accredited massage therapy certificate program requiring a minimum 500 hours of instruction plus supervised clinical hours. A Bachelor’s degree is strongly preferred. Three years (or 2,400 hours) of professional massage experience, preferably in a healthcare facility (e.g., hospital, hospice or extended care facility), is required. Certification by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB), and membership with the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) or an equivalent association, is required. A current St. Joseph County Health Department Massage Therapist permit is required; maintaining the permit will also be required.

    Knowledge and Skills

    Requires technical knowledge and expertise necessary to provide therapeutic and relaxation massage treatments to recipients.

    Requires strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology in order to perform and communicate massage assessments and treatments with recipients.

    Requires current CPR/AED certification and First Aid Certification or arrangements to be certified within the first three months of employment.

    Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively with a diverse group of massage recipients in a professional, courteous, friendly and sincere manner.

    Required:

    Hold current state massage therapy license

    Adhere to all current regulations and laws related to massage therapy

    Ability to handle sensitive client information with confidentiality

    Ability to pass a background check
